In CA, ambition beats principle

by SUN
For around a dozen Democrats in the CA Assembly, political ambition outweighs their ethical principles. They know marriage equality is morally right; but they fear ( perhaps correctly) that California voters aren't yet ready.

SACRAMENTO, (AP) --

A bill to legalize same-sex marriage in California stalled on its initial vote
Wednesday [ June 1 ] in the Assembly, but supporters used a parliamentary procedure to keep the measure alive while they tried to round up more votes.

The bill failed on its first vote 35-37. It needed at least 41 votes to pass the 80-member house by the end of the night. [.....]

The Assembly bill would amend the state family code to define marriage as between "two persons" instead of between a man and a woman. Before Wednesday's vote, the superficially simple semantic change sparked an emotional debate over the meaning of marriage and the definition of discrimination. [.....]

If the bill failed a second time Wednesday, its backers would have at least one more shot at having it reconsidered before week's end, said Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, the bill's lead author. [....]
