Brief Description of Event: Young democracies as diverse as Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine, Zimbabwe, Ukraine, and Kyrgyzstan have recently held highly anticipated and closely watched elections. The US sees elections in emerging democracies as a key step towards building democratic institutions and ultimately a more peaceful and just world. But elections are not always open and fair, nor do they always produce the outcomes we expect.
