open letter to government

by Rev. Paul Allen Fisher (paradise @shocking.com)
This is a letter I actually sent to every Senator via email on May 22, 2005. After this posting I will send it to all the Representatives. Feels liberating! Is your organization working on these or similar issues? If so, please let me know how we might further your cause.
May 22, 2005
To all our elected representatives,

We are very outraged about the current attack on our Democratic Republic, that is the attempt by extremists to essentially "highjack" Constitutional process and eliminate the fillibuster. We are equally outraged that some members of our government feel they can operate "above" Constitutional law with impunity. Several of our government officials are blatantly conducting themselves in a clearly illegal manner while apparently the rest of you stand idly by, ignoring your sworn duties to protect and defend our Constitution. This is only the latest in a long string of usurpations that are beginning to tear at the very foundation of law and order in our society. How can you expect to maintain civil obedience from the People when all the people see is illegal behaviour coming from those entrusted to uphold the law?

The People recognize that a fascist growth has taken root in our nations halls like a cancer . We also recognize that there are voices of dissent in Congress and we are very thankful to those individuals that have tried to hold true to their oaths. However, we are also equally aware that there is much more that you should be doing. The People have a right to demand, yes demand, that our elected public servants conduct themselves in a manner befitting the position they are entrusted to hold. We demand that those in government be held accountable for the crimes they have committed and continue to commit. And do not offend our senses with arguments of there not being any evidence of misconduct. With all respect, may I remind you that you hold your position by consent, in fact OUR government exists by virtue of our consent. We do this freely to ensure life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all.

If the People cannot trust those that have been selected to represent them, then the People must reserve the right to implement their "nuclear option", that is our absolute right to withdraw all our support from the government until our Petitions are answered to our satisfaction. An illegal "act" of Congress long ago tried to quash this right and make it so the People would believe the right of Petition extended only so far as freedom of expression. This most important of our precious rights was specifically to give the People the power to prevent tyranny without resorting to violence. This right of Petition is OURS to reclaim and assert including all rights to withhold, and we will have our rights and we WILL have our Petitions answered.

The only acceptable solution to that which confronts you is to take to the floors of your respective Houses and let your voice amplify the Will of the People, which is to remove these criminals by impeachment and to undo the damage they have already created. The People will do their part and support you in every step and rally to your aid. Numerous scholars in our country have already draughted the necessary Articles, all you need do is initiate them.

There are at least 55 million people in this country who did not vote for Bush. An exceedingly large percentage of those are fully aware of the level of criminal misconduct that occurred in the election and that continues to occur under the auspices of law. We do not recognize George W. Bush as President and we believe him to be illegally occupying the White House and stealing from the Treasury. We pledge as Thomas Jefferson pledged that we "have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man." If you are not willing to do that which the Constitution and common decency require of you, then the People will be forced to provide for their own posterity by withdrawing all support, both economic and social, from the government and those that serve them. My lifes purpose has become to see to the expungement of that which the Bush administration represents. He is not a man of God, though he pretends to be, and he has no place in public service. I ask now what you intend to do about this matter and I would appreciate a timely response so that I might relay your message to those that I serve, that being the people of my community and of my nation and of my world. In the absence of a favourable resolution to our Petitions, we will assert our right to withdraw all our support from all levels of government and we will encourage others to assert their rights as well. So you see, you have a choice. You can either throw all of us in prison and confirm our cause or you can do that which the Constitution requires and our ancestors expect. Henry David Thoreau wrote that prison is the only place for a free and honest man. Impeach George W. Bush and remove those that serve him, repeal the Patriot Act and bring our troops home now! Be the leader the People can be proud of.

Sincerely yours in steadfast patriotism,
Rev. Paul Allen Fisher
