COMPASSIONATE CONSERVATISM - FOR ANIMALS
Matthew Scully, former speech writer for President Bush, appeals to the conservative right and makes a powerful argument for animal protection - first in his beautifully written book, Dominion, and now in his article in the magazine "The American Conservative." He bases his argument for animal protection not on rights, liberation, or ethics, but on mercy.

"He writes, "if conservatives do nothing else about any other animal issue, we should attend at least to the factory farms, where the suffering is immense and we are all asked to be complicit. We need our conservative values voters to get behind a Humane Farming Act so that we can all quit averting our eyes. This reform...would leave us with farms we could imagine without wincing, photograph without prosecution, and explain without excuses."

READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE AND PLEASE WRITE A LETTER TO THE MAGAZINE THANKING THEM FOR PUBLISHING AN ELOQUENT DEFENSE OF ANIMALS. TAKE 10 MINUTES TO WRITE TO letters@amconmag.com.

GOOD NEWS FOR HORSES!
It's nice to report good news; I'm sure you're happy to get it. In past issues, I've urged you to take action to protect wild horses from being sent to slaughter. On Friday, the House overwhelmingly approved an amendment that prohibits sending the animals to slaughterhouses. Last December, the BLM was allowed to start selling horses older than 10 years, when Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT) quietly slipped an amendment into an omnibus spending bill without any discussion, unceremoniously undercutting the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Protection Act of 1971. The legislative battle will now move to the Senate... Read more.

DID YOU KNOW?

A new investigation exposes the blatant lies of the government-led Milk Advisory Board's "Happy Cow" ads. For those of you outside of California, these are deceptive ads showing "dairy cows" on idyllic grassy knolls rejoicing that their lot in life is to give their milk to un-weaned humans. (Well, seriously folks - even their calves don't drink their mother's milk after 2 years old!) Please don't stop reading if you don't live in the land of - ah-em - "milk and honey." Get it? California is the nation's largest dairy producer, so if you drink the stuff, this pertains to you, too!

A lawsuit brought against the Advisory Board for false advertising was thrown out when a court ruled that the government is exempt from the state’s false-advertising laws! The judge even acknowledged that if the ads had been made by a private individual, false-advertising laws might apply.

Judge for yourself. A new investigation by Easy Bay Animal Advocates documents with photos what California dairies really look like. The arguments against humans drinking cow's milk (or ANY animals' milk!) are numerous and scientifically sound. Did you know that in the last edition of his much-revered book Dr. Spock's Baby & Childcare (which has sold over 75 million copies), Dr. Spock said that no human, no child, no adult needs cow's milk -- it's a deception on the government's part to promote." So, don't listen to me. Take the advice of Dr. Spock, arguably the most influential pediatrician of all time.

By the way, cows (well, all "cattle") were wild animals that were domesticated for the purposes of human consumption. "Cattle" are herd animals and thus easy to contain because they move together and stay together. In other words, "cattle" meet certain requirements that make it easy for humans to control them. Let's not kid ourselves into believing that humans struck nutritional gold when they started drinking cows' milk. If hyenas were easy to control, we would have done the same to them. And did you know that hyenas' milk has been found to be "four times" more nutritious than that of cows? The calcium content is very high (they eat a lot of bones!), as is the protein content. My point is that cows' milk is not manna from the heavens. It is a commercial product that has had billions of dollars behind it in advertising and it is totally unnecessary (in fact, it's harmful) for human survival and health.

Oh, and by the way - eat your calcium - but get it from the same place cows get it: from the ground, which is where all minerals are found. Green leafy vegetables (kale, collards, chard, broccoli, etc.) are the best sources of calcium.

True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to fore only when its recipient has no power. Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test, consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect humankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it. ~Milan Kundera: The Unbearable Lightness of Being
