FBI fears bunny huggers
the bureau is committed "to bring to justice those who commit crime in the name of animal or environmental rights."
Washington - Extremist animal rights groups like the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front pose a serious domestic terror risk and are a top law enforcement priority, a senior FBI official said on Wednesday.
At a hearing of the United States Senate's Committee on Environment and Public Works a senior US legislator said the threat posed by eco-terrorists is serious and widely underestimated.
"Extremists have used arson, bombings, theft, animal releases, vandalism and office takeovers to achieve their goals," said John Lewis, Deputy Assistant Director of the FBI's counterterrorism division.
Lewis said that between 1990 and 2004 animal and environmental extremists committed "1,200 criminal incidents, resulting in millions of dollars in damage and monetary loss."
"Investigating and preventing animal rights extremism and eco-terrorism is one of the FBI's highest domestic priorities," Lewis told the panel, adding that the bureau is committed "to bring to justice those who commit crime in the name of animal or environmental rights."

It doesn't matter what many people believe, but ALF and ELF hurt people by commiting acts of property damage. These things cost money and extend far beyond the corporations they intend to harm. Insurance rates increase for all of us, and many hard working people are put out of jobs. These acts accomplish nothing but gaining new enemies for the animal rights/environmentalist cause that were not there before. Not to mention casting all such groups in the same light, sending the cause back years for each such occurance.
Acts meant to instill fear in the population no matter what the cause meets the very definition of terrorism. What the FBI fears is what america and I myself fear; that it is only a matter of time before someone is accidentally killed by the actions of these groups. And quite honestly all it takes is one rogue member to harm someone and the Government will have nothing to stop them from arresting and crushing these groups; this would fit the plans of all those who would rather not have an animal right/environmentalist movement.

"vandalism"
"animal releases"
yes, by all means, devote all reasonable resources to stopping offices from being taken over and animals from being released
what's that? al qaeda trained to fly airplanes within the US? chemical plants today have only voluntary security measures? baggage holds on airplanes are currently unsecure? ports are still unsafe? home-grown fundamentalists are whipping up hate for gays? right-wingers are yammering for judges heads?
yes, we can all sleep better at night knowing that stopping bunny and tree huggers "is one of the FBI's highest domestic priorities". money well spent, I can tell you that.
