Sacramento Los Angeles
State Capitol Pershing Square
(South Steps) (Corner of Olive & 6th Streets)

4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
(Rally program starts at 4:30 with groups arriving at 3:00)

Join CTA and other groups concerned about California's future for demonstrations against the governor's so-called "reforms." Rallies will be held on May 25 in Sacramento (http://www.cta.org/Features/StateBudgetCrisis/05/ActionDay_Sacramento.htm) and Los Angeles (http://www.cta.org/Features/StateBudgetCrisis/05/ActionDay_LosAngeles.htm), and are expected to generate thousands of supporters.

This broad coalition -- the Alliance for a Better California (http://www.cta.org/Features/StateBudgetCrisis/05/Events/ABC.htm)-- unites to protect our state, while the governor continues to raise more special interest contributions than any governor in state history. We don't need to waste $70 million on a special election that no one wants with initiatives that no one supports. We need real reforms that will move California forward, rather than the governor's broken promises and short-sighted proposals that will further damage California public schools.

What would $70 million buy? Click here to find out: http://www.cta.org/Features/StateBudgetCrisis/05/ActionDay_70million.htm

Help send a messge to the governor that the "special interests" he keeps referring to are thousands of ordinary citizens and workers concerned about public school children, hospital patients, and overall public safety.

SACRAMENTO RALLY

May 5, 2005

UPDATE: Thousands of Educators Mobilizing
Northern California Teachers to Pack Sacramento May 25

The word is spreading far and wide. Thousands of Northern California CTA members will be joined by Central Valley teachers at the massive May 25 protest rally in Sacramento, the same day as a huge protest in Los Angeles. The rally sponsor, the Alliance for a Better California, is a coalition of nearly 2 million educators, school administrators, firefighters, nurses, health care workers and others. The Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) is part of the Alliance and is urging its members to attend both rallies. [[Download ACSA's letter to superintendents.] Together, we are sending the message that we don't need to waste $70 million on a special election in November for initiatives that hurt us all.

TIME and LOCATION: 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., South steps of the State Capitol, 10th and N Streets.

ENTERTAINMENT: Starts at 3:30 p.m. and will include a choir of teachers, a high school marching band and a firefighters' bagpipe and drum band.

CATCH A BUS: There is limited space still available on buses rented by the Alliance for a Better California that teachers can catch as they stop in Fresno, Merced, Stockton, Modesto, San Mateo, Alameda and other cities. CTA chapters will soon get flyers with bus stop information and phone numbers to call if they need a ride.

TRANSPORTATION: CTA chapters should charter buses quickly – they are going fast as scores have already been reserved. Mass transit and carpools are encouraged. Those who drive and park on the south side of downtown Sacramento can take light rail to the Capitol; those who park on the north side can take shuttles. More details coming.

STAGING ARRIVALS/DEPARTURES: We are working with the city so that most buses can unload and load on 15th Street in Sacramento, between L and N Streets.

PROTEST SIGNS: Materials to make protest signs will be provided at the rally, and customized signs on message are encouraged. Printed signs will also be provided. CTA is encouraging chapters to hold local sign-making events to engage chapters.

QUESTIONS: Contact your CTA office or primary contact staff.
