GIRLSTOCK TURNS 3

Two Day Grassroots Philanthropic Event Featuring Women & Genderfluid Artists
- Happening in the East Bay this May

Berkeley, CA (April 12, 2005) ---- Like art? Spoken word? Music? Yummy Food? Dig Women? Dancing? Good times? DJs? You can have it all, and you can also help to end the cycle of homelessness by coming to Girlstock #3. This is an east bay event not to miss!

Over 30 women and genderfluid artists are showing their artwork and performing on Saturday, May 21st and Sunday, May 22nd in Berkeley and Oakland respectively. Girlstock attendees will be showered with a rich concert of provocative spoken word, super fresh dj’ing sultry singer/songwriting and a stacked roster of full on rock, disco/soul, and edgy punk-ish bands. While this year’s headliner group is VON IVA, a smashingly hot gal foursome who will be coming to you fresh off of their West Coast tour with the Bellrays, every performer at Girlstock merits headliner status given their masterful honing of their artistic talents. Come and check out all of the featured live music including Shelley Doty, Teri Falini, Placenta (formerly the “Lactators”), Lisa Hayle, Tellus 818, Anastasia Lund, and Maria Q.,

Proceeds from this benefit are going to the Youth Emergency Assistance Hostel, a non-profit Berkeley group focused solely on the homeless youth population. The Youth Emergency Assistance Hostel (YEAH!) was founded by four women in the fall of 2002 who saw a gap in the services available to youth ages 18-25. What is unique about YEAH! is that in addition to offering seasonal housing to homeless youth, they also provide shelter for their children AND their pets.

In the summer of 2002 Girlstock was realized by a collective of like-minded individuals who wanted to promote the amazing range of art created by women and genderfluid artists while also benefiting a non-profit in need. Girlstock #2 took place in September of 2003 at Cherry Bar in San Francisco, and was a benefit for the Women’s Cancer Resource Center in Oakland, California.

A native of the Haight Ashbury in San Francisco, Girlstock founder Maei Thomas (a/k/a Maei Flowers), was old enough to mingle with some of the last remaining flower children, but too young to have made it to Woodstock. Ms. Flowers awoke one day with a burning vision to combine her love of the arts with the critical work of helping others. Girlstock was born. Thus far over 40 artists have contributed to Girlstock events, including the bands BiteSize, Kitty Rose, Glitter Mini 9, and Kindness; powerful writers Shar Rednour (author of “A Femme’s Guide to the Universe”), Carol Robison, Misty Hecht; superb singer/songwriters Jolie (of Lotusdog), Jackie Strano (of the Hail Marys), and Lisa Hayle (of Thumbtribe).

This year, Saturday’s art opening features the work of artists Bethany Ayres (Gallery of Urban Art), Natalie Chandler (Black & Blue Tattoo), Elin Christopherson, DK Haas, Cha Levias, Meta Logerfo, Kerri Stephens (Varnish Fine Art), Trish Tunney, Margo Mercedes Rivera-Weiss, and Jennifer Waicukauski. Exhibition dates at Belladonna are May 21st through May 27th, M-F, 10-5pm. This multi-disciplinary group show features oil, watercolor, photography, glass and metal. Don't miss an opportunity to meet these phenomenal artists in person, participate in the silent auction, and take this amazing work home!

On Saturday beginning at 3:00 p.m., come and hear tales as told by writers Nicole Henares, PK McBee, Amrah Johnson, and Mo Betta. PK McBee is a writer/performer/arts organizer/sometimes-journalist primarily from Boston and Pittsburgh. She is the former co-organizer, co-host, and curator of K'vetsh Pittsburgh; and she also co-hosted K'vetsh Boston with Sara Seinberg. She has read her work at the RADAR Reading Series, Homo A Go Go, LadyFest Philly, K'vetsh San Francisco, Brown University, Sarah Lawrence College, and more. She is currently, endlessly, working on her first book, "The Milkman Theory", which is concerned with bad dads, hot girls, and the physics of love.

Amrah Johnson is a fierce political activist/writer who has articles appearing in the East Bay Express and Mesh Magazine. Published prolific poet and high school English teacher Nicole Henares lives in San Francisco with two cats and a Finnish bluesman who used to be a farmer. Henares’ prose can be found online at http://www.poesy.com, online poetry magazine http://www.poetrybay.com and also through the Magenta Press. Mahogany Elaj Foster, known affectionately as MoBetta: Thug Poetess, was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. A poet since the age of 10, Foster credits poetry as being her official first language, as it is her most fluent form of expression. Having began a career developing workshops and speaking in schools at the age of 15, Foster is a ten year vet in the game of making poetry pay. A long time believer in art as a means of commerce, Foster is well versed in the hustle. From her independant Spoken Word Mixtape series, Smokin’ Words Volume I to her graffiti clothing line 4Love&$ the poet keeps a presence in the streets.

Maria Q. will put you in the mood with her pristine guitar stylings and voluptuous vocals. Saturday’s headliner band, VON IVA is a group of four women who are tearing up the music scene with their sexy, driving and mesmerizing disco soul-infused rockin’ sound. Come catch VON IVA and be prepared to shake your pants as former members of “7 Year Bitch” team with vocalist Jillian Iva to tantalize your ears and your soul. Versatile and uber-talented guitarist and singer Shelley Doty, a local gal who is a Lillith Music Fair winner and who has played with the likes of Bonfire Madigan (Kill Rock Stars) will also bring her magic to the stage. If anyone could channel the scintillating soulful guitar licks and rock-infused bluesy vocals of Jimi Hendrix, Shelley Doty would be the chosen one. Come and personally witness the musical mastery of Teri Falini, whose infectious driving vocals, and edgy lyrics about suburban living gone awry will have you grooving and will force you to ponder the meaning of life itself. Backed by a solid core of tight musicians, Teri Falini WILL rock you. Jolie returns this year with her new project Tellus 818 and they promise to bring the music! Come and check out Lisa Hayle's soul-penetrating lyrics and her mesmerizing stage presence. You will not be disappointed.

And last but not least, be sure not to miss all mom band Placenta, four women who bring home the bacon AND the guitar axe, AND the drum set – all for you and their tiny tots! Placenta has been featured in articles appearing in USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune and numerous other rags around the country because of their hard-hitting anthems about the unspoken joys of motherhood. DJs Sarah B. Selector (spinning classic soul), and Molly S. will set the proper vibe and keep the space grooving all night. Hosted by your gracious emcees Maei Flowers and Shelly Crouse-Monarez. Doors at 2pm, Show at 3pm. $8 before 4pm; $12 after. Eight hours, 2-10pm. Ages 18+. Volunteers for both days welcome to contact us. Trade short shifts for free admission. See you there!!!!!
