"Eli inspired me to give in to my own wildest nature,
my own violent claw at love, my own hunt and impatient
struggle. She taught me to pet and expose the part of
myself most desperate for love, taught me that
desperation for love... is nothing more than a
desperation to live, which is holy." - from the
introduction by Michelle Tea
Five years ago, beloved San Franciscan Eli Coppola
died of a sudden heart attack at the young age of 38,
after many years of battling of muscular dystrophy.
She left behind many dear friends, her beloved dog
Lucy, and pages of heartfelt, well-crafted poems that
speak of love's difficulties and rewards, as well as
the ever-present specter of mortality.
Now Manic D Press has brought together Eli Coppola's
writings in a single volume entitled Some Angels Wear
Black: Selected Poems, edited by David West, with an
introduction penned by Michelle Tea.
Friends and admirers of Eli Coppola will gather to
celebrate her life and read from Some Angels Wear
Black: Selected Poems at Modern Times Bookstore on
Tuesday, May 17th at 7 p.m. Featured readers will
include poet/novelist Michelle Tea, editor David West,
publisher Jennifer Joseph, and many other friends and
colleagues from readings at the Café Babar, Chameleon,
and Paradise Lounge.
Some Angels Wear Black, available at bookstores
everywhere on May 17th. $13.95, Paperback, ISBN
0-916397-71-8, 160 pages, Poetry. Also available from
