This is a major defeat to the anti-gay extremists who use bait-and-switch tactics to
mislead and divide voters. Elected officials hammered away today at anti-gay
extremists for disguising their real intentions to deny basic legal protections and
responsibilities to gay and lesbian couples and their families through California's
domestic partnership laws.

Our community must build upon this momentum and stand together against any future
attacks on our families. Those who preach hate are not going away. They are
determined to hurt us and to harm our families, and they will continue to do so no
matter the cost. They have gone to court, and lost. They have gone to the
legislature, and lost. Now they say they will go to the voters where they will use
fear and hate to try and convince people that one group of Californians should be
denied equality. We cannot--we will not--let them prevail.

Today was a victory for our community and a reminder of how important it is for all
of us to stay involved and be visible.

Yours,

Live Update from Hearings on Constitutional Amendments: II

May 10, 2005
12:30 P.M.

Dear Karen,

The Assembly Judiciary Committee has just struck down Assembly Constitutional
Amendment 3, by Assemblymember Ray Haynes (R-Temecula) with a 6-3 vote. This is a
major defeat for anti-gay extremists and these discriminatory amendments.

Executive Director Geoffrey Kors of Equality California highlights the major
problems and concerns with this proposed amendment:

"This proposed Constitutional Amendment appears to be designed to repeal
California's Domestic Partnership Law and prevent the legislature, the courts and
the voters from passing laws to provide any legal rights and protections to lesbian
and gay couples. This extreme measure would not only prevent lesbian and gay
couples from obtaining civil marriage licenses, but would likely strip away the most
basic protections that tens of thousands of California families now enjoy thanks to
California's domestic partnership laws. From denying hospital visitation and health
insurance to prohibiting domestic partnership protections and marriage equality,
this dangerous Constitutional Amendment threatens California families and
undermines the basis of our constitutional government: majority rule with protection
for minorities.

"The proponents of this immoral, anti-family, measure talk about protecting
families. But the truth is that this measure will do nothing to protect a single
California family: it will not help any parent provide food, shelter or clothing
for their children, it will not put an extra teacher in a classroom or buy even one
needed textbook, it will not immunize even child against a life-threatening disease.
Simply put -- it will do absolutely nothing to help a single California family.
What it will do is make it harder for tens of thousands of parents to provide for
their children's most basic needs as they are forced, instead, to deal with the
reality of losing health insurance for their children. It is truly outrageous that
the proponents' claim that this measure -- a measure that advocates stripping away
existing protections from California families -- will actually protect families.
Nothing in this extreme Constitutional Amendment protects a single family.
Nothing.

"The proponents of this measure have said that they will raise and spend tens of
millions of dollars to run ads attacking families headed by lesbian and gay parents
in order to pass this measure. If they truly cared about families, they would spend
that money to help families provide health care and food for their children. If
they really cared about families, they would spend that money to hire teachers and
provide textbooks in our schools. But they aren't concerned with families. They are
concerned with imposing their extreme views on all Californians and hurting some
families -- families different than theirs. And they don't care how many children
and how many families they hurt in the process or how much it costs.

California is better than this. We respectfully request your no vote on this
dangerous and extreme attempt to write discrimination into our Constitution."

The Senate Judiciary Committee will be hearing Senate Constitutional Amendment 1, by
Senator Bill Morrow (R-Oceanside) at 2:30 P.M.

Please continue to stand up for equality in the face of this audacious right-wing
attempt to roll back twenty years of progress. We will send at action alert with the
results from this hearing later today so you can stay engaged.

Yours,

Steve Hansen
