Picket at Badlands

by deanosor (deanosor [at] comcast.net)
An informational picketline at Badlands Bar in the Castro occurred Saturday night from 10pm-12M, in support of a boycott called to protest the discrimantion policies of the bar.
On Saturday night, May 7th an informational picketline was held in front of Badlands Bar, on 18th St. in the Castro District of San Francisco. from 10pm to 12 pm. This picketline was called in support of a boycott of the bar for discrimination against Black and Latin employees and customers. The San Francisco Human Relations Commission has recently ruled against the bar. The ruling was prominet in the literature handed out to many passersby on the Street,

Badlands which has in general a white male "Guppie" crowd was not as full as a normal Saturday night where there is usually a long line, despite lowering the price of drinks, and having "greeters" thruout the gayborhood leaflettign people for the bar. These greeters who were both male and female and made up up of many races were the most diverse crowd of employees they've ever hired.

The 50-60 picketers were a friendly crew of people. They seemed knowlegeable on the subject and had some lively chants. My favorite one was "Happy Anniversary. Five Years of Bigotry". This was because the bar in giving the discount drinks was promoting that this was the bar's 5th anniversary.

A picketline will be held every Saturday night, between 10pm and Midnight in front of BADLANDS on 18th St. betwenn Castro and Collingwood in San Francisco.
