Viva!USA Alerts 5/6/05

1.  Californians: Calls needed to STOP AB 734!!
2.  Help save our wild horses
3.  Vegan bands tour Mexico

1.  Calls needed to STOP AB 734!!
Despite the many calls and witnesses in opposition to AB 734, the bill to make the sale of products made from kangaroos legal in California passed the Water, Wildlife and Parks Committee on Tuesday, April 26th. It is being pushed forward very quickly and will be heard on the Assembly floor THIS COMING WEEK!

To stop this bill, we will need to move quickly. We are asking all California residents to call their Assemblymembers and urge them to vote NO on AB 734!

To find your Assemblymember, go to:  http://www.assembly.ca.gov/ and select "find my district".

For more information on this bill, and Viva!USA's kangaroo campaign, go to: http://www.vivausa.org/urgentactions/ab734.html

Only one committee member voted against the bill. If you are able, please write a letter of appreciation to Assemblymember Fran Pavley (Special Note:
Assembly Member Lori Saldana's office called to tell us that she voted
incorrectly on the bill and intends to vote NO on the floor).

2.  Help save our wild horses
Last Thursday, April 28th, it was discovered that 6 wild horses sold by the BLM were slaughtered at the Cavel International horse slaughter plant in DeKalb, IL. Also, it was recently discovered that a Sioux tribe sold 35 wild horses to a dealer who then sold them to Cavel, bringing the number slaughtered up to 41.  Under the 2004 Burns amendment, the BLM is allowed to sell older and unadoptable animals at livestock auctions, where they are likely to be purchased by "kill buyers." To help end the slaughter of our wild horses and burros, please contact the Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, and urge her to stop the sale of wild horses and burros until protections can be put in place to ensure they are not sold for slaughter.

Also, contact your legislators and urge them to co-sponsor the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (HR 503), as well as HR 297 and S 576. HR 503 protects both wild and domestic horses from slaughter, while HR 297 and S 576 will reinstate protections for wild horses.

3.  Vegan bands tour Mexico
A new vegan band tour is scheduled for July and August throughout Mexico.  The tour aims to promote veganism through music, food and education. The tour consists of Tears of Gaia, Alguna vez fui Ciego, and Tamora joined by local bands from each city.  Literature and food samples will be available to spread the message that going veggie doesn't mean giving up your culture or good food.

If you have friends or family in Mexico, encourage them to support this tour.
