Update on Cammerin Boyd case

by deanosor (deanosor [at] comcast.net)
The San Francisco Office of Citizens Complaints has taken up the Boyd police murder.

During the 1 year memorial for the murder of Cammerin Boyd by police officer, as they were leaving to go to City Hall, word came down that the Office of Citizen's Complaints (OCC) has decided to investigate the case. The OCC reports to and is the investigative branch of the San Francisco Police Commission which has the power to to reprimand, discipline or fire police officers it finds brutal or harasing. More will be reported as more is known about this surprising circumstance.

This evening about 70 people gathered at 5 PM on Laguna and Eddy, i year after the murder of Cammerin Boyd by SFPD. The Boyd family gave a bouquet of roses to each family of other victims of police brutality: Family of Sheila Amaya, who partially have won the case after 7 years of struggle, of Gus Rigley (mother Elvira Pollard just obtained an autopsy report, 10 months after gus' murder, and always carry in her purse the pictures of his bullets ridden body, more than a hundred... The report demonstrates that Gus was not armed, and was not under the influence... Elvira was HANDCUFFED, along with her 3 yr grand daughter to a pole for nearly 2 hours, when she came at the scene to hug her child) Family of Mark Roosenberg, bipolar young man killed by Hayward PD 3 years ago. Friends of Sheila Detoy, murdered by SFPD 6 years ago, whose case is now in federal court. Friends of Rudy Cardenas, killed last year by a narc agent in San Jose, mistaken identity. Friends of Rickie Escuvido, murdered 2 years ago by Redwood City PD. The crowd also evoked the memory of Gregory Hooper and Richard Tims, murdered by SFPD, and Cau tran Bich murdered in San Jose. And family of Julio Ayala, beaten to death by 13 South SF PD, hardly a month ago. While October 22 Against Police Brutality Coalition held high their stolen lives banners. Friends of Cammerin Boyd and Idriss Stelley shared spoken words, while Sisters led us into prayer and sang to celebrate the lives of our lost angels. A sudden shock, followed by shouts of victory and relief: While we hugged and cried, the news exploded: Charges were brought today against Cammerin assassins ! The families then headed the march, stopping at the very spot were Cammerin drew his last breath, children dropping flowers by the site, songs and poems of sorrow mixed with renewed hope. We took over Fillmore, Eddy, up to city Hall, reminiscing the powerful words of Minister Chris Mohammed, public defender Jeff Adachi, Jakada and Malaika Parker from Ella Baker Center. By City Hall Mrs Marylon Boyd cried out: Mayor Newson, when will you deliver?". Then we formed a circle and drew strenght from each other.

A somber discovery when coming back to our starting point on Laguna: Marylon's car back window smashed to pieces. Strangely, the alarm did not go off. Even more puzzling, nothing missing from the inside of the car, untouched radio, CD's, clothing... Should we ponder about the perpetrators, enraged about today's victory in Cammerin's case? They did not even take the time to make it a believable "thugs" ' hit and run with the goods...

The anti-police brutality movement is taking tremendous momentum, thanks to the courage and persistence of Cammerin and other murdered Black and Brown Brothers and Sisters in the Bay Area.

I did not talk about my son Idriss. We need to concentrate on the living, on our shattered and endangered youth, and keep fighting the corrupt system like hell to save their lives. Let the police take a report of their own crime, as minimal as boken windows for starters. Our angels are smiling, knowing that we grow stronger, breaking the silence.eath row on the street? WE SAY HELL NO !

To Idriss's mother:
Do you carry the same torch of outrage and search for justice for Officer Isaac Espinoza's family? If you do not, you are a hypocrite.
by John Q Public
Maybe I'm missing something so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but, didn't OCC say that the shooting and killing of Boyd was absolutely justified and proper action? OCC was concerned about the bullet holes in his car and that shooting his car was wrong...Hmmm.....is body work really that expensive these days? Why would they care more about his car than him? Great work OCC...LOL...LOL
Hmmm... Sounds like the cops could get fired because they weren't entirely blameless. Let's think about that before we defend their actions...

"The Office of Citizen Complaints filed charges May 5 against three officers involved in the shooting of Boyd, 29. Two officers, Timothy Paine, 38, and James O'Malley, 35, are accused of improperly firing their weapons. Both are 10-year veterans of the department.

A third officer, Owen Sweeney III, 56, was charged with violating the department's policy on pursuits.

The charges all stem from the incident, but none has to do with the actual fatal shot that killed Boyd."

Good question.

Killing is always wrong. My heart goes to the Family of Isaac Espinoza, killed in the line of duty. His memory is honored in the community and PD, and 150 SF officers, along with Chief Fong, Assistant Chief Greg Surh and Commander Pucinelli this month in DC will pay tribute to Isaac Espinoza. I deeply empathize with his family, wife and children, as all mothers of homicide victims.
by Idriss Stelley Foundation (iolmisha [at] cs.com)
At least, you remain factual and did not indulge in his usual hystrionic style. Thank you !
by NAACP
The OCC was bullied into filing meaningless charges by Police Commissioner Peter Keane. If this was going to be a "victory", the charges would have to be in regards to the shooting of Boyd, not shooting at a moving vehicle...which we all know the police are allowed to do if they feel that their lives or the lives of others are in danger. And the charges regarding the pursit policy is a complete reach. These charges are just a smoke effect so it looks as if Peter Keane is the one changing the Police Department. Peter Keane wants to run for Mayor and his shameless grandstanding is causing this whole situatin to become a joke.
by SF HISTORY OF PAYING OUT
The only reason this situation is an issue at all is because Marylon Boyd wants to sue the city of San Francisco, which has a history of paying out instead of battling it out in court. If the city attorney would stop paying out families of those who attempt to injure our officers it would send a much greater message. Don't pull this crap in our town. This is all about money and as long as the city keeps paying the families of those who come here and break the law, this cycle will never end. I have yet to see a tear fall from that womans eye. Perhaps when her lawsuit falls through, she might actually be in need of a box of tissues.

To Idriss's mother:
You didn't really answer the question. Do you feel the same outrage for the killer of Officer Espinoza and seek the same justice you are demanding of the Officers who defended themselves and the public against your son and Cammerin Boyd? Of course you empathize with Officer Espinoza's family, as do people empathize for the family of lost loved ones, even if the loved one was responsible for the situation that led to their demise.

And I beg to differ that killing is always wrong. Killing in self-defense is not only moral and justified, it is legal and a protected right under the Constition of this great nation. Officer Espinoza was not killed in self-defense, he was assasinated. Cammerin Boyd and your son were killed in self-defense and defense the of others.
by actually
The word in the Bayview is that Espinoza wasn't such a hero afterall, he was what some have called a "beatdown artist" which is slang for an abusive/corrupt cop. Let's not worship the guy, kay?
by wu tang
Calling Isaac espinoza a beat down artist is disgraceful. The man treated everyone fairly. You are just an ignorant puke trying to piss off the cops by making stupid statements, kay!!!
by you're wrong, cop lover
Sorry, you're wrong. This is information per people who live in the Bayview/H.P. area, as well as service providers in that area. Simply being a cop dosen't warrant a person being put on a pedestal---whether they're dead or not....kay?
by Shut Up cracker
I'm sure your white lilly ass spends a lot of time in the Bayview. You area complete fool. Officer Espinoza respected the people in this community. And I for one do not want some snotty nosed white idiot trying to talk about how people in my community feel. You have no clue. You did not know Officer Espinoza..so shut the hell up. And if you ever do decide to show your punk ass face here on the Hill, you will be suprised to see that we don't want your B.S. empathy. Enough with the "white man's guilt". Spend a night in Double Rock and then you can tell the world how it is in the Bayview you loser ass white boy.
by D Kalookie
Officer Espinoza was a good man. That is not to say that all cops are good. There are definitely bad cops just like in any profession. But, I must agree with the person who wrote that for some ignorant white person to come on here and say that he knows how we feel in the Bayview is a complete and total joke. I doubt for one minute that you even know anyone who lives here. I doubt for a second that you have ever spent any time in our neighborhood except to maybe go to the trendy coffee shops in the lower Po'. Service providers? Who? You are pathetic, man. Do you really think we give a shit out here about what some silver spoon little white boy thinks. People are dying out here you fool. Officer Espinoza was trying to stop the insanity. You want to see how it is? Let me know.
by Joe
It must be nice to have your finger on the pulse of the Bayview as you are sitting in your safe kitchen somewhere in San Ramon. We aren't stupid. You have no idea.
by Sugar Hill
Typical white dork. "I know some people who know a guy who said he lives in the Bayview and he told me that Espinoza was a "beat down artist". You, my dorky white friend are a goddamned fool. Thanks for giving us the definition of the "ghetto slang" terms you use. You should probably stick to protesting against "fur" and eating meat and stay out of the hood. You obviously don't belong here.
by First of all
You really don't know a thing about me. ( I'm the one who said that he's a beatdown artist.) I also think that some of those posts were probably cop lovers disguising themselves as people from the bayview/hunter's point area. But of course I can't prove that. Just wanted to put that out there. But as for the other crap you spewed:
1. "I'm sure your white lilly ass spends a lot of time in the Bayview"
The only thing that was right was that I'm white---I've lived in the Bayview--on Thomas, just past Keith--now in the Excelsior

2. "I doubt for one minute that you even know anyone who lives here. I doubt for a second that you have ever spent any time in our neighborhood except to maybe go to the trendy coffee shops in the lower Po'"
I never went to a cofee shop the whole time I lived there---and still know people who live there---some are active in the community re: PG@E's polluting power plant, some actually work in substance abuse treatment and some run programs in Bayview.

3. "Do you really think we give a shit out here about what some silver spoon little white boy thinks"

Never had a silver spoon, made 2 trips to prison--sold drugs, used drugs, changed my life and have been in school for 4 years---work w/ homeless, drug addicted, HIV, and folks w/ psychiatric disorders---this is one of the ways I try to give back to my community (which is all of S.F.--not just one neighborhood---I live in the Excelsior now)

4. "It must be nice to have your finger on the pulse of the Bayview as you are sitting in your safe kitchen somewhere in San Ramon. We aren't stupid. You have no idea.

See above, never been to "San Ramon"---and I sure have an idea of what it's like to be in a war zone, been to some real crazy pennitentiaries and did alot of violence while I was caught up in that insanity that I'm not proud of---one of the reasons I do what I do (in terms of helping people and activism)----so you have no idea

5. "You should probably stick to protesting against "fur" and eating meat and stay out of the hood. You obviously don't belong here.
I've never protested "fur" and eating meat---and I really don't think you know shit about the hood if you're sticking up for this cop so much---I don't bad rap all cops, but I believe and trust my sources about this one.

I also don't believe that all these postings (probably from one person, maybe a cop) could possibly be from a bunch of people in the Bayview, as there aren't a shitload of people out there who have had good experiences w/ law enforcement---not to say there aren't any--but there is, in general a negative view.

There was a time I'd have had a different response to all the "cracker" shit you talked, but the reality is you aren't worth it.
by Brother D-Day
Quit defending yourself. This isn't about you. No one cares.

Out
by You're right
You're right--just enjoyed refuting the attacks on the posts as they were so far off base----fuck 'em----but once again, I beleive the people who told me that Espinoza wasn't Supercop, as he's been portrayed in the media and by some postings.
I'm outta here.
by Cousin
If you were a cop, and your life was on the line. Isaac Espinoza would have had been there to protect you "had your back." He was a Good Cop. If you only would have had a chance to meet him. He was not a "Judgemental" person. He got along with everyone. LETS NOT FORGET THAT. Isaac tried to tried to make Bayview a better place because that where are grand parents lived. He tried to make your home safer, and he died doing it. He died making a difference.

Isaac is my cousin, and I know he was not what you call "beat down." He loved his family, and he did everything to make people proud of him. Now we suffer the loss.....

Thanks everyone.
by Yeah, sure
Maybe your cousin was more than met your eye.
by Cousin
Meet the eye? Did you know him? Do you have names of people my cousin supposedly "beat up?" Please share with us? I'm sure you won't have one. You'll probably just tell me off or call me ignorant, right?
by to "Cousin"
If you really are his cousin, and not a cop. No, you're right, you're not going to get names. Tough. Deal with it. You are w4elcome to try to deptict him as a 'hero' all you want. I trust my sources--who I will not reveal--and have no doubt that he wasn't Mr. Nice Guy when dealing w/ folks out on the street.
by Stop bashing police officers
The folks out on the street are not exactly the upstanding citizen types. Possibly the people the officer was encountering needed to be dealt with in a stronger manner. Plus, your story is all hear say anyway. It's like a fish story being told to the 3rd person. This website likes to bash police officers in general. Yeah maybe there's one bad cop out there somewhere, but to say this officer in peticular is a bad one without personal experience is another. I think you need to redirect your energy and try shopping, leave the officer in peace.
by stop defending pigs
I love the 'few bad apples' theory that always gets thrown around---as if it's not a culture---we all know the 'blue wall of silence---msot cops are criminal/gangs giving the blessing of the law to do their violence...
by police vs streets
Riiigghttt....seems to me that there's more criminal/street gang violence out there than there's misconduct issues with the police. And, is it also possible that you are in denial of any wrong doings of the opposing side. I am sickened by the fact that you all can speak so horribly about a dead officer/person. How do you sleep at night?
by I sleep well--that cop was a sleazebag
I refuse to drool over him and make him out to be a hero---and while there are certainly folks who do bad things out there--that doesn't justify the cops doing the same....
by Being perfect
And i'm sure that if you look into your past, everything you've done has been politically correct right? Oh no it's not, name calling and gossiping about a dead officer. Your character needs some revamping.
by Don't lose sleep over terrorist pig
I know it eats you up, but I just don't care about that brutalizing pig.
by Karma
No, it doesn't eat me up. I'm just as strong with my convictions as you are with yours. I however, don't go around name calling people, especially the ones that have passed on whether good or bad.
by Well, I don't try to make a pig a hero
And I'm not brainwashed with superstition that would have me believe that speaking the truth about someone who died is 'bad karma'. Hog wash. LOL!
by more than one side
The truth is 3 sides- yours, theirs and the real truth
by the truth is
That you don't want to know the truth. While this cop may have presented himself in many ways, to many people, the bottom line is that, by his actions, he became known in the Bayview as a beatdown artist. As much as there is (for many reasons) a bias in the community that is not pro-cops, not every cops gets this label. This one did. So let's not paint some glassy eyed picture just because he's dead.
by MURDER IS MURDER!
NOTE...to loose a SPOUSE, FATHER, SON, GRANDSON...is an unexplainable pain that never leaves. No disrespect to his family, but I too have heard of some of the Crooked Cop stories from people of the Bayview. But Crooks..deal with Crooks...I know of someone who went to high school with him and said that he was nice...but when you get into the SFPD or any PD there are codes you must live by..or if u don't abide...best believe..u and your family lives are on the line! And I know this from having family and people I know in SFPD, LAPD, DCPD, & SDPD and a majority of them just leaving either the department or that line of work all together! And it's pretty much the same thing. And this makes division within the departments! So there are some good and bad..right now it just seems to be more rotten apples surfacing because they are givin the most authority to do what it is they are really trying to do...MAKE MONEY! GUN EXCHANGE (AK-47'S) BECAME RAPID IN ALOT OF AREAS OF SF! HOW ARE YOUNG MEN OF COLOR GETTING THESE TYPES OF WEAPONS? AND WHO ARE THE SUPPLIERS? MOST OF THE TIME IT'S NOT WHAT YOU SEE IN GANG FLICKS WHERE IT'S SOMEONE WITH MANY CONNECTIONS AND PULL....BUT IT INDEED IS THE POLICE WHO HAVE ACCESS...AND THAT'S WHY THEY WANTED TO BE ABLE TO HAVE SEMI-AUTOMATIC WEAPONS GRANTED TO THEM FOR REGULAR USE! BECAUSE WHEN THEY STATED THAT THEY WANTED TO HAVE SEMI-AUTOMATIC WEAPONS, BECAUSE "GANGSTERS" IN SF WERE USING THEM..JUST SEEMED ASININE AND OBVIOUSLY THERE IS ULTERIOR MOTIVES. So may God keep Officer Espinoza spirit, his wife , his daughter, and the rest of his family, because you have suffered a loss in your family, and may God Bless You!
by If there's a hell, Espinoza is there
Rest assured.
