This issue isn't so clear cut
Can we trust Poor magazine? There are two sides to this story, which Poor magazine skips right over. Many local West Oakland black residents support this development project despite the gentrification that will probably happen. That's probably why a pretty far to the left, city council person like Nancy Nadel is neutral on the project. Furthermore a lot (but not all) of the activists are outsiders to this West Oakland neighborhood. This issue is far from as simple as Poor magazine presents it.
We need a deeper, more nuanced reporting on issues like this development in West Oakland, so that those of us who are concerned with social justice can make informed judgements. Unfortunately Poor magazine isn't up to the task.
