Square Dance Raises Money for GI Resisters and Iraq Vets
"Old-time anti-war square dance" raises over $1,000 for Navy war resister Pablo Paredes and Iraq Veterans Against the War.
Hosted by many of the Bay Area's hippest anti-war groups, the Bernal Hill Stringband, the Squirrelly Stringband, and the Stairwell Sisters -- with Evie Ladin doing the calling -- kept the dance floor spinning and doe-c-doeing through the night. After expenses, over a grand was raised for Navy war resister Pablo Paredes and Iraq Veterans Against the War. Special guests included Kevin and Monica Benderman -- Kevin in facing a May 11 trial for objecting to a second Iraq deployment, and Stephen Funk, the first resister to this Iraq War. In addition to all the bands and co-sponsors, special thanks to folks from the International Socialist Organization, College Not Combat, CODEPINK, CCCO and the Not in Our Name crew for making it happen.
