Michael Milich is right...This is Bullshit!

Text from a flyer by the D.A.A.A. Collective, about the ongoing attack on Medical Marijuana by city lawyer Mike Milich, and the Modesto City Council.
Michael Milich is right...This is Bullshit!

On Tuesday, April 19th, Mike Milich, the “city’s attorney”, leaned across to Modesto Mayor Jim Ridenour, and told him to “clear the chambers. This is bullshit”. The statement could not be heard by the audience of people gathered for the city council meeting that night, but was audible on videotape. This comment was in response to people screaming and shouting at the city council after the item on Medical Marijuana still had not be addressed after 6 hours, and the fact that the city, under the direction of Mike Milich, was trying to remove all medical marijuana stores from Modesto. Like in meetings before, the council had purposely put the item towards the back of the meeting, forcing many people with life threatening illnesses to leave and not have their voice heard. Also, illegally the Modesto City Council put out speaker cards for people wishing to address the council, but only allowed them to do so if they put their name. This is against California law, and many people were afraid to identify themselves in front of the police. Mike Milich is right about one thing concerning the whole marijuana debate, “this is bullshit”.

California voters voted last year to allow Medical Marijuana to be sold in the state, allowing it to be purchased by a person with a note from their doctor. Medical marijuana has been shown to be a good alternative to corporate pharmaceuticals, it allows people to be happy and more sociable, and also to improve the appitete of people who are sick. Currently in Modesto, two stores exist, and the store that first opened was the “California Healthcare Collective Inc.”, a small store located on McHenry, which sells medical marijuana to people with the right ID and doctor’s papers, (among other over the counter herbs and medicines).

According to Michael Milich, there will be chaos in the streets, and more crime and drugs if the stores stay open. City Council members are also concerned about how keeping the stores open will look to young people, who have grown up with the DARE program and police on every corner. What’s a drug war to do when it’s okay if you’re sick, but it’s not okay if you’re 17? Despite the council’s stance, many very sick people have made an important stand against the proposed ban on stores, and have spoken in favor of medical marijuana as a drug that heals and helps, and not one that leads to social decay.

If the stores are closed down, many people will be left with few options, all of which are bad. One, if that they will risk buying weed on the street, which could lead to arrest, getting bad weed, or being shot or robbed. Some patients will go to Oakland, but not all can afford or are able to. Other patients will go back to taking other drugs, which as many pointed out, have horrible side effects, and drive many to depression, suicide, and further sickness.

According to Milich in a report to the mayor, medical marijuana stores lead to "illegal drug activity, theft, robbery and burglary, and a concentration of marijuana use in public places". The examples Michael Milich gives, are of communities in which the medical marijuana problems have been blown out of proportion. Rocklin CA, which is listed in the report as a major example, is extremely untrue, according to various Non-Profit patient’s rights groups that have come out to council meetings. According to various non-profits, in Rocklin a drug dealer was sealing drugs in front of the store, when the store owner called the police. The police then went in and started hassling the owners. The media then arrived, and stated that the store had repeated problems with drug dealers. Also, the idea that a store that sells a herb that is available on every school yard, every alley, and in every other house, defies logic. It is based upon the idea that unless social order is kept, people might, gasp!, do things for themselves!

Are we going to let upper crust fucks like Milich dictate and control the lives, (and levels of pain), felt by OUR loved ones? How dare they pass laws that affect us ordinary people, while they snort coke behind close doors. We are the ones that will have to face repression from the police, go to jail, and in the end, not be able to afford health insurance and doctors, not people like Mike Milich. It’s time to stand up to the rich bureaucrats that pass as our “representatives”, and say, …“this is bullshit!”
