Please mark you calendars for a very important and special event! The day before
Mother’s Day, we are gathering together to pay tribute to mothers who have been
separated from their children, blamed, excluded, and dismissed by the justice
system, and who have simultaneously fought tirelessly to protect their children and
stand up against abuse.

Books Not Bars is joining with Youth Justice Coalition, Escuelas Si Pintas No,
AYPAL, and many others to honor mothers of incarcerated youth across the state.
Mothers have been at the forefront in the struggle for a new justice system — one
that lifts youth up instead of locks youth down.

On Saturday, May 7th, we’re bringing hundreds of people from the Bay Area, Central
Valley, Los Angeles, and elsewhere, to rally and march with music, poetry, dancing,
and voices of justice and hope. Let this be the last Mother’s Day to pass in
California with youth locked inside abusive prison warehouses and mothers outside
fearing for their children’s safety and future. Let us honor and support the
mothers who suffer the most from California’s failed justice system. Together we
can close the CYA’s prisons and open opportunities for youth across the state!

We want — and need — you to join us! We need to show California decision-makers
that people across the state stand with mothers of incarcerated youth and support
closing CYA’s prisons. Now is the time to come together, celebrate our
accomplishments, and organize until we win!

Hundreds of people from Northern and Central California already want to go to this
event in Southern California, but we REALLY need your help! It will cost us about
$50 per person for transportation and food.
