FACTIONS among insurgents in IRAQ:

Among insurgents in Iraq, the most militarily-active groups are Sunni Arab Iraqis (including secular Baathists); and "jihadists".
Politically-motivated Sunni Arab Iraqis must look to Iraq for their future (if any);
so eventually they must either die (not a very attractive option for secularists), or win control of Iraq by force (impossible); or negotiate peace with amnesty. Eventually, some Sunni Arabs will enter the political process; while others will be content to retire in safety, collecting pensions based on their service to the former Baathist regime.
But the religiously-motivated jihadists (comprising many groups of fighters), whether foreign or Iraqi, will fight until they die, or until they must flee from Iraq. Their future, in their opinion, lies in the afterlife, not in this world. For each indvidual jihadist, death in battle is an attractive option (as a "martyr", he moves directly to Paradise, regardless of any past sins).
In Iraq, each grouping has a characteristic style of fighting. Suicide bombers are usually jihadists,
blasting themselves into a better world. Secular nationalists are more likely to use non-suicidal methods of guerilla war (as practiced in Latin America or Northern Ireland, for example), where each fighter has some chance of surviving. So, when you read a report of an attack, the modus operandi gives you a hint as to "who done it".
