SB 662 (Migden) will be heard in the Senate Committee on Agriculture on Tuesday, April 19, 9:30 a.m. in Room 113.

Senator Carole Migden is carrying SB 662 for CAA. SB 662 amends the California Methods of Slaughter law to include spent hens and small game birds. Over 1 million of these birds currently are not included under any regulatory oversight.

Senator Migden has requested that there be a large number of supporters at the hearing on April 19th to state their name and, if appropriate, the organization they represent. Impressive numbers of attendees are necessary because the California Farm Bureau, California Poultry Federation, and the Food Processors are opposing this bill.

AB 1587 (Saldana) has been amended into the Penal Code. It has been double assigned to both the Assembly Committee on Agriculture and the Assembly Committee on Public Safety. It will be heard in the Assembly Committee on Agriculture on April 20th and tentatively in the Assembly Committee on Public Safety on May 3rd.

AB 1587 seeks to ban certain methods of killing animals on farms or in backyards. These methods include killing by grinding, burning, burying alive, drowning, rapid freezing, and suffocation.

Because the two hearings will be close together please write a support letter addressed to:

Assembly Member Lori Saldana
State Capitol Building
Sacramento, CA 95814
Fax: 916-319-2176

Your support letter needs to be received by Assembly Member Saldana's office by this Friday, April 20th!
