The AFSCME website says nothing about the strike.
I sent AFSCME an email yesterday requesting information regarding the strike (why, history, etc), and have recieved no response.
I googled "AFSCME UC strike", and came up with letters from the UC's warning about the strike, some articles about there being a strike... but precious little about the particulars of why and what led to it.
...and nothing from AFSCME explaining their side of it.
If they can't be bothered to provide information supporting their cause, why should I honor their picket line?
My decision to cross the line or not will not be made based on a 2 minute reading of something handed to me on my way into the building, and unless I find more information on it tonight I won't be honoring the line.
I am not alone among UC workers in this feeling this way.

Not that you're really a UC worker, because all the UC workers I've talked to (more than a few) know about and support the strike.
But here's two links anyway.

STUDENT AND COMMUNITY SOLIDARITY ACTION WITH STRIKING UNIVERSITY WORKERS
On Thursday, April 14, AFSCME Local 3299, is planning a one-day strike on
all nine University of California (UC) campuses.
AFSCME represents thousands of service employees vital to the day-to-day
functioning of the UC system. The workers going on strike are some of the
lowest paid on each campus - custodians, gardeners, food service workers,
etc. They are going on strike for immigrant workers' rights and for a
decent contract and living wages. Other campus workers - clerical workers,
technical workers, graduate student instructor's, etc. (and their
associated unions) - will also be supporting the strike.

We will MAKE OUR WAY TO INTERNATIONAL HOUSE (Bancroft and Piedmont)
AROUND 4 PM and join striking workers to "greet" the new chancellor at
his INAUGURATION PARTY AT 4 PM. We will make make sure he knows that we
are willing to take action in solidarity with campus workers.
