Remembering Soldiers Who Died In Iraq: Civic Center Memorial

by Z
Eyes Wide Open, the American Friends Service Committee’s widely-acclaimed exhibition on the human cost of the Iraq War, features a pair of boots honoring each U.S. military casualty, a field of shoes and a Wall of Remembrance to memorialize the Iraqis killed in the conflict, and a multimedia display exploring the history, cost and consequences of the war.

this is an important memorial in that it informs the public in a way that the media has failed to do. unllike the viet nam war that was brought to civilian living rooms each day, the iraqi war is a distant event that most people probably dont give much thought to thanks to the minimal coverage.
it is projects like the this one that keeps us all aware of the void created by the brutal actions of war. thoughts of a human being having filled the boots lined out in the memorial gives joy, only to realize that he or she will never ever wear them again because they are gone forever, leaves us all less whole.
while we are prohiibited from witnessing the bodies of our soldiers returned home, this is a testiment of another kind. it screams of hypocracy.
this is a priceless memorial.
