WASHINGTON, March 9 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Population Connection, the largest progressive grassroots population organization in the United States, is calling on New Jersey legislators to adopt legislation currently pending in the state legislature –- SB 2178 introduced by Sens. Fred Madden and Joseph Vitale and AB 3772 introduced by Reps. Linda Stender and Robert Smith -- to “prohibit pharmacists from refusing to dispense medication solely for philosophical, moral or religious reasons.” The bill will require pharmacists to fill birth control prescriptions, regardless of their personal beliefs.

“Pharmacists have a responsibility to provide their customers with the medicines prescribed by their doctors,” said Brian Dixon, director of government relations. “They should not, indeed they cannot, be allowed to substitute their personal beliefs for the medical decision of a woman and her doctor.”

A number of pharmacists around the country are simply refusing to fill prescriptions for birth control. This troubling trend is denying women the ability to meet a primary healthcare need. Contraceptives are one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for women between 18 and 44. Moreover, the prevention of unwanted pregnancy is the number one health care concern for women in that age group.

“A pharmacist’s choice to place priority on personal opinion, rather than on the needs of the customer and the public health of the community, represents a stunning intrusion into the private lives of women, and undermines the patient-doctor relationship,” continued Dixon. “Pharmacists should not be allowed to interfere with the medical rights of their patients.”

“Refusing to provide women with prescription contraceptives is discrimination -– pure and simple,” Dixon added. “A pharmacist's responsibility to meet the needs of the patient must take precedence over his or her personal beliefs. And this legislation will ensure that it does.”
