The protracted struggle of the shipyard workers of Naval Gijón escalated on March 3, as workers fired home-made rockets at riot police. A few workers were injured by tear gas canisters or rubber bullets, and two police officers suffered slight injuries when a rocket hit their police van.

Shipyard workers across Spain began fighting privatization in February of 2004. Tactics included workplace occupations, road and railway blockades, and assertive self-defense against riot police actions.

The Naval Gijón workers have rejected deals made between their union and their employers, as the Gijón shipyard has been privatized. Naval Gijón workers are now demanding a service load to secure their employment.
