Homophobia splits world Anglicans, etc

by TBL
The world Anglican communion develops a split personality, as liberal portions of the Canadian and U.S. "provinces" embrace queers; while most Third World provinces stick to the homophobic 19th century.

VATICAN'S FUTURE?

What may happen in the Roman Catholic Church
after Pope John Paul II, now 84, departs?

This prospect affects everyone on this planet, including non-Catholics and non-Christians.
The Vatican, a sovereign state, has considerable political, economic, diplomatic, and social power. A pope's actions and policies can affect one country or the whole planet. When his bishops discourage governments from subsidizing effective methods of birth control, poor Third World women have even more babies. When he allows RC bishops to publicly scold a liberal Roman Catholic candidate for U.S. President, he helps a reactionary non-Catholic candidate.

The next pope will be chosen by certain members of the College of Cardinals -- those who are under the age of 80. Since 1918, all cardinals must be priests. Since 1962, almost all are bishops; and many are archbishops. As of August 2004, there were 190 cardinals, of whom only 123 were young enough to vote.

Many of these 123 were appointed by Pope John Paul II, who has increased the total number of cardinals considerably since 1998-2001. I'm guessing that he preferred conservative bishops who share his views (but if anyone has contrary evidence, please post links). I think, with more confidence, that he tried to expand the geographical diversity of the college.

For more than four centuries, until 1978, Popes were Italians.
JP2 is Polish, and his election aided pro-democracy movements in Poland, leading toward liberation of Eastern Europe.

Will the next Pope be from Europe?
Latin America?

Liberal,
moderate,
conservative,
or reactionary?

Wondering,
