Israel Violates Ceasefire

by Dave Kersting
Israeli unilateral violations of the ceasefire are ignored by the media. Imagine how the media would respond if Palestinians did this...
As the article below details, Israel has murdered five Palestinians, including two children, since the beginning of the current “cease-fire.” The Palestinians have not violated the cease-fire in any way, not even in retaliation.

If Palestinians had killed a single Israeli – whether a child who had earlier thrown a stone, a soldier in the Israeli army of invasion and occupation, or an armed settler in one of the ever-expanding “Jewish Only” subdivisions which that army installs and protects – we would have seen front-page news about that Palestinian destruction of the cease-fire, complete with photos of mourners, and we would be expected to approve when Israel used the “provocation” to justify renewed slaughter.

Israeli and local Zionist leaders know that these Israeli murders – which ALWAYS continue during the “cease-fires” – are intended to mock the Palestinians and show them that there is no real intention toward peace, despite international pressure, which is satisfied with these shams of “negotiations.”

These broad-daylight atrocities, for the expressly racist purpose of “Jewish” supremacy in most or all of Palestine – and all the inevitable, regional spin-off horrors, in Iraq, Afghanistan (watch for Syria and Iran next) – are totally outside the control of US politicians because a highly vocal, active, and organized minority of US citizens, who gain personally from ever-expanding “Jewish” advantage in the Middle East, are counter-posed against the lethargic disregard of the remaining majority of voters and taxpayers: and the Zionists take particular care to make sure that the “progressives” and “anti-war” activists are herded into political positions and statements which only help obscure the flaming racism of Zionist policies.

The relentless massacre and annihilation of Palestine, for the openly-declared sake of “Jewish” dominion in Palestine, financed by 15 million US tax dollars every day, is the most flagrant campaign of POPULAR ethnic violence in this country since Southern slavery. It is not going to stop until it is stopped by those who uphold OUR CONSTITUTION and all we claim to believe about ethnic and religious EQUALITY – or until it drags the globe into irreversible disaster.

Israel Severely Violates Ceasefire
February 17, 2005

Since the ceasefire was declared on 8 February 2005 between Palestinians and Israelis, Israeli forces have violated the ceasefire several times.

The following is a sample list of Israeli violations of the ceasefire, the Road Map, and international humanitarian law since 8 February 2005:

· The assassination of two members of the al-Aqsa Brigades, a branch of President Abbas’ Fatah party, on 15 February. Issam Mansour and Mahyoub Alqani were shot and killed at close range with several live bullets to the head and chest in a Palestinian house in the village of Kufar Qalil. Witnesses say the attack was unprovoked.

· The killing of 15-year-old Ala Hani Khalil near Beituniya on 15 February by Israeli personnel guarding the illegal Annexation Wall in that area. The shooting was said to be in retaliation for stones that he and other children had thrown at Israeli military vehicles to protest the illegal Wall. Another boy of 14 was seriously wounded by the barrage of live fire.

· The shooting to death of 16-year-old Sabri al-Rjoub in Hebron on 14 February. Soldiers claimed he was carrying a knife, but Palestinian eyewitnesses say the boy was unarmed.

· The killing of a 20-year-old resident of Rafah on 9 February, the day after the ceasefire was declared. He was a civilian walking near his home in Rafah when he was fatally wounded by Israeli Forces’ gunfire from the Atzmona settlement.

The above five killings demonstrate Israel’s unwillingness to carry out confidence-building measure with the Palestinian side. Deliberate attacks against children and members of al-Aqsa Brigades, part of President Abbas’ Fatah party, are intolerable acts of provocation and incitement.

Prime Minister Sharon has also postponed the promised release of 500 Palestinian detainees, and Israeli authorities have broken their word by suspending their withdrawal from the West Bank city of Jericho and flouted good faith by refusing to transfer the nearby town of al-Awja (Uja) to Palestinian control along with Jericho.

Other Israeli actions in violation of the Road Map and international law which threaten to destroy the viability of a future Palestinian state:

· The planned construction of a new settlement called Gvaot near Bethlehem which will likely house settlers being evacuated from Gaza this summer.

· The construction of a new settlement on Jayyous village land in the Qalqiliya region. The new settlement is being built on part of the 75% of Jayyous’ land that was isolated from its owners by the Annexation Wall.

· The planned expansion of the Alfei Menashe settlement, which will expropriate more land from the villages of Habla and Ras Atiah in Qalqiliya region to connect it to Nirit village in Israel. This move is strongly opposed by the Israeli village of Nirit itself.

· The massive expansion of the Betar Illit settlement in Bethlehem district, which is currently stealing and destroying Nahhalin village land.

· The expansion of the Har Homa settlement, also near Bethlehem, which will squeeze up against Palestinian towns and make natural growth impossible.

· The continuing failure if the Israeli Army to obey standing orders to evacuate and dismantle several unauthorized Israeli settler outposts in the West Bank, which were deemed illegal by the Israeli High Court.

· The continuing failure of Israel to abide by the International Court of Justice ruling and stop construction on the Annexation Wall, dismantle it, and compensate the victims whose property was expropriated or destroyed. Israel is accelerating construction in many areas, including a highly controversial section of the illegal Wall 20 kilometers deep inside West Bank territory – which is only 50 kilometers wide. The Wall as planned will steal vast tracts of the West Bank’s most prized farmland and water resources and cut the northern West Bank practically in two, severely undermining its contiguity and viability. The Wall as planned will also sever Bethlehem's ancient cultural, spiritual, and commercial ties with Jerusalem.

· The construction of new Israeli settler bypass roads, which Palestinians are not allowed to use, as well as special tunnels for Palestinian use only which can be easily blocked off at any time by Israeli military or police forces. The new constructions are designed to entrench a system of Apartheid, annexation, and collective imprisonment.

· On Tuesday, 15 February, a Palestinian woman was denied passage through the Qalandia checkpoint and was forced to give birth in a car at the checkpoint.

· The planned demolition of five Jayyous farms and ranches located on the Jayyous side of the Annexation Wall, claiming that they were built without an Israeli permit - even though they were built before Israel occupied the land in 1967.

· The planned demolition of at least 85 Jerusalem-area Palestinian homes to make room for a gratuitously large ‘security buffer’ around the Annexation Wall.

· The planned demolition of up to 3,000 Rafah homes for a dubious Israeli "security moat".

· The recently announced decision to force East Jerusalem residents to acquire an Israeli permit in order to visit the West Bank, which will be enforced after the Jerusalem section of the illegal Annexation Wall is completed this summer. This will force thousands of East Jerusalemites either to break ties with their friends, family, culture, and career in the West Bank, or to abandon their homes in Jerusalem.

BECKY: Perhaps Indyreaders would be interested in a few incidents that didn't make it into the above article. The following "Score Card" for how Abbas and Sharon have done since Abbas took office in mid-January was prepared by Israeli Historian, David Meir-Levi. I invite indybay readers to post any corrections or serious ommissions to this list in order for readers to have all the facts before they come to any conclusions. ---- Becky Johnson

OLIVE BRANCHES ON BOTH SIDES: A SCORE CARD

David Meir-Levi 2/18/05

WHAT ISRAEL HAS DONE SINCE ABBAS TOOK OFFICE ON 1/15/05

Re-opens channels of communication with Abbas and deputies

Meets with Abbas and deputies in local, national and international arenas

Releases hundreds of thousands of Palestinian workers' payroll-tax dollars to PA

Calls a halt to targeted assassinations of wanted terrorists (= amnesty for terrorists)

Releases 500 prisoners (44 known terrorists) and promises to release c. 400 more (*)

Returns 15 corpses of terrorists to Gaza city to relatives for burial

Amnesty for dozens of West Bank terrorists exiled to Gaza Strip, now allowed return to West Bank

Re-iterates commitment to leave Gaza Strip, unilaterally or co-ordinated with PA

Approves pull-out from Gaza and compensation to Israelis leaving Gaza

Orders army to fire ONLY if fired upon (thereby greatly endangering IDF forces)

Ignores daily rocket and mortar attacks, drive-by shootings, fire bombings

Ignores 6 attempted suicide-bomber attacks

Ignores Abbas' statements on right of return, legitimacy of Hamas et al

Ignores the fact that Abbas' own Tanzim group mounts terror attacks

Declares end to home demolitions as deterrent measure against suicide bombings

Frees movement so West Bank Arabs can visit relatives in Gaza Strip and vice versa

Agrees to CIA arming and training PA security forces in anti-terror tactics (despite the fact that the same thing in 1994 as part of Oslo accords merely armed PA terrorists who used training and weapons to attack Israel)

Agrees to evacuation of IDF from Jericho and let PA forces take over

Agrees to remove IDF from Ouja village near Jericho and let PA forces take over

Permit the re-opening of Casinos in Jericho, PA taxes from profits in $$millions

Slows down construction barrier to "snails pace" and re-directs route to aid Palestinians

Agrees to turn over Gaza border area of Philadelphia corridor to PA, after Dahlan threats

(*) NB. 8678 terrorists are in Israeli jails; at least 70% are deemed to have taken part in terror murders. Note too that a terrorist apprehended in 10/01 and released in 1/04 as part of a "prisoner exchange", where Israel released hundreds of terrorists in exchange for the bodies of 3 Israeli soldiers, was killed on 2/15/05 while trying to enter the Israeli village of Bracha, near Shechem (Nablus).. He and another terrorist were armed with automatic weapons. Both are members of the PLO Tanzim, a force supposedly under the command of Mahmoud Abbas, President of the PLO.

WHAT ABBAS/PA HAVE DONE SINCE ABBAS TOOK OFFICE ON 1/15/05

Reduces (but not end to almost daily) Hamas et al attacks

Deploys of Palestinian security forces (but with orders not to use weapons = official green light to terrorists)

Incorporates c. 350 Hamas et al terrorists into his security forces (all wanted by Israel = official amnesty to terrorists)

Declares no force ever to stop or disarm terrorists, no civil war (= green light to Hamas)

Promises no extradition of terrorists (= green light for more terrorism)

Unfreezes charities funding terrorists so Hamas et al have access to money (= legitimization of hamas and terror activities)

PA silent as Hamas et al promise massive attacks when Israelis pull out of Gaza (= tacit approval of terrorism)

Silent as Hamas et al maintain daily terror attacks and attempted but foiled attacks (= tacit approval of terrorism)

Abbas offers Hamas et al place in PA government (= legitimization of hamas)

Abbas declares legitimacy of Hamas et al in local elections (= legitimization of hamas)

Abbas promises full 'right of return' to Israel (not to new PA state) (= rejection of final peace with israel, continued commitment to war with Israel)

Abbas Ok's execution of 3 alleged collaborators (= defines interaction with Israel as capitol offence = defines Israel as enemy)

PA silent as officers declare they will never use force against Hamas et al (= green light to terrorism)

Declares that Israel's release of "only" 900 prisoners is "insulting" (= supports hamas et al claim that all 8678 terrorists must be released)

Fires 3 high-level security officers (but not for lack of action against terrorists)(**)

Abbas is silent as Mohammed Dahlan threatens that attacks will continue unless IDF withdraws from Philadelphia corridor (it worked, see above)

Abbas is silent as Hezbollah declares an increase in compensation for families of suicide bombers, from $25,000 to $100,000 per bombing (i.e., if a family has more than one child undertaking a suicide bomber mission, the family can collect $100,000 per child).( = tacit encouragement of more suicide bombers)

The terms of Abbas' "cease fire" with Hamas et al do not prevent the terrorists from re-arming, recruiting, training, smuggling arms through Egypt under the Philadelphia corridor, and in general preparing for the next great terror jihad; slated to begin when the Israelis are moving out of Gaza, with women and children and aged and ill and disabled making their way in busses and caravans from Gaza strip.

(**)The three were fired because their troops took no action when armed gunmen entered a Gaza jail and murdered three inmates as part of retaliation in an inter-clan feud. These are not the same three that are arraigned for 'collaboration'.
by Abbas is screwed
Palestinians want him dead as do Israelis. To people like Becky hes a terrorist who probably deserves to be assasinated whereas to many Palestinians hes seen as a pawn off Isreal and thus a target. On the Israeli side I think some of the anger really is that Abbas will likely mean that nothing can get in the way of a Gaza pullout. For Palestinian activists outside the region I think its more related to a romaticization of armed struggle that is lost when people reject violence. Considering the polarization it is doubtful Abbas will live through the next year.

>>>Considering the polarization it is doubtful Abbas will live through the next year.<<<

So let us forget about the settlements (nothing is being done about the 1,200,000 arabs who live inside Israel, we are not dismantling the places where they live and sending them to the West Bank and Gaza) and go ahead and make that Viable Palestinian State in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza called for in the Road Map to Peace...
Then the Palestinian People will be free and Abbas will be spared.

Thirty-six years of war should be enough for such a small number of people, when you consider the World Population.
Allowing the Palestinian People to have their small state in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza can solve this conflict.
There are 1,200,000 or so Arabs living inside Israel Proper.
There are 400,000 or so Jews living inside the West Bank and Gaza.
Trying to remove all the settlement can be an almost undoable task.
So Set the Borders for Israel to it Pre 1967 Border (Green Line) and have the State of Palestine inside the West Bank and Gaza.
If the U.N. can decide the Borders of Israel in 1948,
The U.N. can decide the Borders of Palestine in 2005.
You would end up with Israel with a majority Jewish Population and Palestine with a majority Muslim Population.
This would allow for the Israeli Military to Guard and Control the Israeli pre 1967 borders instead of confiscating Palestinian Land and Demolishing Palestinian Homes in the West Bank and Gaza that only goes to fuel the need for the Palestinian People to fight for their Freedom.
The Jews who do not like living in the new Palestinian State can feel free to move to Israel if they so choose.
The Arabs living inside Israel can feel free to move to the new Palestinian State if they so choose.
Almost every nation on earth has more then one ethnic group or religious group, so why not Israel and Palestine?
It would sure be better then the never-ending conflict we have right now.

ANGEL WRITES:
"If the U.N. can decide the Borders of Israel in 1948, The U.N. can decide the Borders of Palestine in 2005."

BECKY: The UN offered the partition plan to the Palestinian Arabs and the Jewish Palestinians. The Jewish people ACCEPTED the plan. The Arabs REJECTED the plan.

At no point was the plan imposed on the Jews. And no borders will be imposed on Israel in 2005 either. The fastest way to peace, is for the Arab nations to accept the existance of Israel as a Jewish State. The borders issue will be resolved quickly and equitably after that point.

Reply to a previous poster: I don't advocate the assassination of any head of state, particularly one elected in what appears to be a fair and open election. I don't advocate any assassination until every other process has been exhausted through the courts,AND every effort to capture the person has been exhausted AND the PA has repeatedly refused to arrest or prosecute that individual AND that person is known to be planning new attacks. Shehada, Yassin, and Rantisi met all those conditions.

And even then, it must be done to save lives, not to take lives.

Perhaps ANGEL believes that Israel should just suffer drive by shootings, snipers, knifings, suicide bombings, kidnapping/murders, and rocket attacks without any attempt to stop the attacks. As though self defense or the defense of others is not a legitimate use of deadly force.

I visited the website recommended above. Alison Weir's, If Americans Knew......organization is not known for unbiased accounts. But now she has sunk to a new low.

Posted there, as if it were plain as the nose on anyone's face, is a "letter" "printed" in the New York Times signed by several prominent Jews of that time, including Albert Einstein.

Dafka recently contacted Peter M. Friedman, a collector of papers and letters by famous people. Friedman has a vintage photograph of Albert Einstein and Menachem Begin standing together as well. We asked him to give his opinion regarding the authenticity the letter, especially since it does not appear in any NYT's archives. Here is his response:

This letter fairly mirrors the "Protocols of Zion" in that it appears to have been a forgery! In fact, the original signed letter does not exist, only fragments of the NYT edition when it was printed. Even the NYT does not have a "conformed" copy.

On the otherhand, Einstein, as well as several of the other alleged "signers" were avowed Socialists and supporters of Communism as many had emigrated from Russia and Russian-controlled territories. Einstein and the others had written extensively on the creation of Israel and the problems it faced, especially in 1948 after the Arab invasion was repulsed.

Begin joined the Irgun, and gradually headed the organization, which can only be compared today to our Delta Force. The Irgun operated outside of the quasi-organized IDF and mainly harassed the British once the British decided not to cooperate anymore with the Arabs. The Irgun was responsible for blowing up the King Davids Hotel, which was the headquarters for the British, which really convinced the British to leave!

What is interesting about the letter is that the Red Cross fully investigated the Deir Yassin "Massacre" prior to the letter and discovered that what the Arabs had reported happened, in fact, never occurred! Deir Yassin was a on a hilltop overlooking Jerusalem and commanded the lookout to the Jerusalem road. In fact, the Red Cross discovered that the town was full of Iraqi soldiers who had infiltrated, many of whom were disguised as women! They approached Israeli soldiers with their hands raised, and then gunned them down! The Arabs took pictures of the Iraqi soldiers disguised as women and published them to frighten the surrounding Arab communities. Again, the Deir Yassin incident was debunked by the time this letter went to the NYT.

The problem is that, as now, there are Jews who are aligned with the Left, and some who are downright Communists such as those who were prevalent in the 20's, 30's and 40's. These Jews, just like today, aligned with anyone who was attempting to defeat Fascism of any kind! Begin, of course, was a Nationalist [read Zionist!] who wanted Israel for the Jews! If you were to take a literal definition of "Fascist", you could make the "intellectual" case that any "Nationalist" is, by that definition, a Fascist. Of course this is wrong, but there are those in our society who are willing to grab onto any little snippet that elevates their cause and belief!

Therefore, based upon the writings and public statements of the alleged signers of this letter to the NYT, it appears, and has always appeared to be a very clever forgery compiled from these public statements and writings. Again, the original letter does NOT exist, which has made it suspect all these years. Maybe Dan Rather knows where it is???

Anything of this magnitude would have been eagerly collected and would be in any of the various Einstein archives, which it is not. It also does not appear as a copy in any of the alleged signer's copies. More importantly, because of Einstein's Left-leanings, the FBI investigated him extensively and created a massive dossier on him, which includes copies of most of his writings. This letter is not even mentioned in the FBI files!

Einstein was very much against the McCarthy hearings and published numerous statements about them, as did many of the other alleged signers. The FBI was keenly aware that there were a great number of Leftist Jews who were being investigated by McCarthy, especially in our nuclear program and in Hollywood. The major movie companies were all owned by Jews, many of whom were making propaganda movies supporting Stalin! Also, Einstein was working on secret nuclear programs, which made him a prime investigative target of the FBI for many years until his death.

In conclusion, all collectors and other persons of intelligence see the "letter" as nothing more than what we just went thru with Dan Rather and CBS with the forged Bush letters!

The Re-cycled Distortion
The Scotsman and Reuters remain mired in 'blame Sharon' and 'cycle of violence' coverage, defying the reality on the ground.

Palestinian terrorists ― launching numerous rocket, mortar, and bombing attacks on Israeli civilians in Gaza over the past few days ― are doing their best to spoil the positive atmosphere engendered by the Palestinian elections.

Though the terrorists are clearly the single obstacle to moving forward, some media outlets have shown an inability to extract themselves from their four year-old narrative that blames either Israel, or a vague 'cycle of violence' for all troubles. The Scotsman, for example, took a wholly innocent gesture from Ariel Sharon and spun it as a provocative act ― note the Scotsman's headline to this Reuters report (Jan. 12):

The Scotsman assigns to Sharon's phone call some causal effect on Hamas' attack, though there's not a shred of evidence Hamas was even aware of this call. It's one thing for the media to falsely accuse Sharon of 'sparking' the last intifada, but will even his peace overtures be blamed for ongoing terrorist violence?

Comments to The Scotsman: click here

* * *

Reuters, meanwhile, seems stuck in 'cycle of violence' mode.

On Wednesday (Jan. 12), one Israeli civilian and two Palestinians were killed in Gaza and the West Bank. Though the three died on the same day, the circumstances of their deaths could not have differed more:

● Gideon Rivlin (pictured, with son and wife) fell victim to an Islamic Jihad bomb placed inside his Gaza residential community. Islamic Jihad released a statement that this terror attack was a direct message to newly-elected PA president Mahmoud Abbas that his recent overtures on Israeli-Palestinian co-existence are unacceptable to them.

● Meanwhile, two Hamas men fell near Ramallah after a concerted IDF effort to avoid any violence:

Soldiers of the Nahal Brigade reached a house in the village to arrest the wanted men. After surrounding the house, soldiers called out to residents to leave the building. When the fugitives failed to surrender, soldiers began demolishing the house in an attempt to force them out. When that failed, soldiers stormed the building, and the two fugitives... opened fire on the soldiers. The soldiers returned fire, killing them. (Jerusalem Post)

Yet in reporting the three deaths, Reuters employed the same 'neutral' terminology that news agencies have favored for the past four years:

Wednesday's killings threatened a relapse into what has been an intractable cycle of violence that, unless quickly checked, could stall fresh internationally backed momentum toward Middle East peace negotiations, frozen since 2000.

In truth, the current situation ― with Abu Mazen reaching out to Israel and (to some extent) challenging the terrorists ― clearly demonstrates just how inaccurate the 'cycle of violence' description is. The 'momentum toward Middle East peace negotiations' that Reuters refers to is threatened by one thing only ― Islamist terrorists who, by their own admission, are not interested in peace.

So the conflict is, now more than ever, a linear one, not circular: Palestinian terrorists strike, the IDF attempts to halt them. The terrorists are motivated not by Israeli acts (as the term 'cycle' suggests), but rather by an ideology that even Reuters acknowledges in this very article: 'Islamists seek to destroy Israel itself and pose Abbas's main opposition.'

In an apparent effort to maintain neutrality, Reuters continues to employ the term 'cycle of violence' to describe the conflict. But in doing so, they distort the basic facts of reality ― a far from 'neutral' position.

No Israel should not have to suffer.....

But if Israel allowed the Palestinian People to have their State where they can live in Peace and with Freedom, instead of confiscating Palestinian land and demolishing Palestinian homes and other acts that go to fuel the >>shootings, snipers, knifings, suicide bombings, kidnapping/murders, and rocket attacks<< There would be less of these attacts and those that did occur could be taken care of by both Sides.

Just wondering? Do you propose that you just get rid of 4,000,000 Palestinians instead of allowing them to have their small State in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza which is only 22% of what is today Israel, West Bank and Gaza.

And if so then why would it be any different to get rid of 5,000,000 Jews inside Israel..of course this would be wrong just like the the prior would be wrong......

Before you go on in circles arguing with Becky about the plight of the Palestinains take a look at her actual views:
"If the Arabs really wanted peace, they would remove their mosque from the Temple Mount piece by piece (and rebuild it somewhere else) and return the Mount to the Jews so they can rebuild the third Temple."
http://www.indybay.org/news/2005/02/1722711_comment.php#1722740
Shes pretty out there to the point where its probably not worth your time arguing with her. Most self-proclaimed Zionist Israelis would find her statement incendiary and offensive so it probably better to argue with sane people rather than fundamentalist wingnuts like her.
I'm not about to make a defense for Becky Johnson; she's perfectly capable of defending her views anyway. But I wouldn't say most Zionist Israelis would find an offending quality in that statement she made.
So should every modern building all over the modern world be torn down because at one time or another something else was built there? This is one of the reasons that the refugees should not be allowed to return into Israel proper becaus their homes and land now have Jewish buildings, homes etc. So since the Dome on the Rock has been there for many many years it should be allowed to remain and at some point become part of the Palestinian State. A Grand Temple can be built anywhere inside Israel Proper....
by Critical Thinker
The Palestinians don't deserve to have the Temple Mount (and therefore the mosques on it) under their exclusive sovereignty.
