IDA News: 2-16-05

by Mat Thomas - IDA
Every animal is a unique individual with a right to live free from pain. Tragically, many innocent animals are victimized by humans who don't understand or respect their value as living beings. IDA has therefore created places of refuge to protect animals from violence. Both IDA's Project Hope in Mississippi and IDA-Africa's Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in Cameroon provide a safe environment that allows animals to experience the care and love they need to be healthy and happy.

You can help these sanctuaries save more lives by financially adopting an animal. Your financial support goes toward food and medical expenses and the staff to care for your chosen chimpanzee at the Rescue Center. When you financially adopt a chimpanzee, you receive an 8x10 photograph and full biography of your chosen chimpanzee, periodic updates and photos, and an authentic handwritten Certificate of Guardianship. Plus, you get the satisfaction of knowing you have made a significant difference in the life of a chimpanzee! Click here
(hhttp://www.ida-africa.org/adopt.html) to see the chimpanzees currently up for adoption.

Project Hope has a similar program that allows people to adopt animals "by proxy." (They also have animals available for adoption that you can take home.) To learn about the animals at Project Hope's sanctuary, please click here (http://www.project-hope.net/adoption_gallery.html).

Adoptions also make great gifts for any occasion, so keep the animals in mind when the next birthday or holiday rolls around!
It will warm the heart of your friend or loved one while making the world a better place for animals, one individual at a time

1. IDA's World Week for Animals In Laboratories

Over 20 years ago, IDA introduced a national day of protest to expose the secret suffering animals endure in research laboratories and raise scientific, moral and economic objections to vivisection. Riding a wave of overwhelming activist response to the annual event, we soon expanded the day into an entire week of action against animal experimentation that now takes place every year. World Week for Animals In Laboratories (WWAIL) now inspires activists from around the world to plan events - from educational outreach to demonstrations - that highlight the plight of animals used in research. This year protests will take place during the last week of April.

Join thousands of animal advocates in taking a stand against cruelty and waste by attending one of the many WWAIL events being planned. Contact event organizer Kristie Phelps at Kristie [at] idausa.org to find out if events are planned in your area or for help planning your own. We will be glad to provide you with free materials for your event and help with its planning.

2. California State Fair Cancels Elephant Rides

The California State Fair in Sacramento has featured elephant rides in the past and was planning to bring them back this year.
Fortunately, the elephant exhibitor - Have Trunk Will Travel - was unable to provide elephants for the date that the fair is scheduled, so elephant rides won't be offered this year.

This is good news for the elephants and fair attendees, because public contact with wild animals poses very real dangers.
Captive elephants are forced to perform through intimidation and beatings, and they sometimes rebel with a vengeance against a lifetime of cruelty. In June 2001, a Have Trunk Will Travel elephant ran amok at the Denver Zoo for three hours, throwing her trainer against a wall and knocking over a mother and her baby. In 1994, a visitor to the Louisville Zoological Park suffered serious injuries after being thrown by an elephant who had been giving rides to children. In 1992, police in Florida gunned down a rampaging elephant carrying five children on her back. There's also a public health risk: there have been documented cases of elephants transmitting tuberculosis to humans.

What You Can Do:

1. Let State Fair officials know how relieved you are that they're not having elephant rides this year and urge them to implement a policy that explicitly bans them from future fairs.
Kari Johnson of Have Trunk Will Travel recently ordered her people to send letters in support of elephant rides and wild animal acts to State Fair officials, so animal advocates need to send a strong message opposing them. The State Fair Board is meeting to discuss the issue on February 25, so please write or call soon.

2. If you live in or will be visiting California's Central Valley, please attend the State Fair Board subcommittee meeting on Friday, February 25 at 10:30 a.m., during which animal issues will be discussed, and voice your opposition to elephant rides in person. Anyone who wants to can speak for up to three minutes. The meeting will take place in the Administration Building Board Room at 1600 Exposition Blvd. in Sacramento. Call
(916) 263-3000 for directions. Please contact Eric Mills of Action for Animals at (510) 652-5603 or afa [at] mcn.org if you plan to attend or if you have any questions.

3. Urge Kenya to Stop Wildlife Export

In recent years, Kenya has been a leader in the fight to conserve African nature and wildlife. The country's longstanding opposition to the ivory trade, the President's recent rejection of game hunting, and support of numerous conservation programs has earned Kenya an admirable reputation for preserving ecosystems. However, Kenya is now considering exporting 300 wild animals to Thailand. Capturing the animals to put them on display in Thailand or any other country will severely compromise the health and welfare of the individual animals.

What You Can Do:

Please write to the Kenya's Ambassador to the U.S. and Kenya Wildlife Service and respectfully urge them to cancel current plans to export wild animals to Thailand or any other country.
Remind them that thousands of conservation-minded travelers visit Kenya each year, attracted by their ethic of wildlife preservation, and that their animal export plans could have a devastating impact on Kenya's growing tourism industry.

4. Join Sea Shepherd's Campaign Against Seal Massacre

Every year starting on March 15, the single largest mass slaughter of mammals anywhere in the world takes place off the east coast of Canada. With the consent of the Canadian Government, hunters commence the slaughter of over 350,000 harp seals - 95% are newborn pups less than three weeks old killed in full view of their mothers. Witnesses have seen and documented many of these seals being sadistically tortured by hunters before being skinned alive.

Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society have long opposed the hunt. They continue to challenge the Canadian Government in the world press and confront hunters directly on the ice. The crew of the flagship Farley Mowat has often put themselves in harm's way in defense of the gentle, helpless seals, and this year is no exception. Photographers and filmmakers plan to document the cruelty inflicted on these innocent victims while courageous animal advocates participate in direct actions.

What You Can Do:

While Sea Shepherd is busy taking on the sealers, they need YOU to take up the fight on land. Activists and groups are needed to join or lead protests in their cities on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 for an International Day of Protest Against the Seal Slaughter in Canada. Such protests are a great way to raise the international community's awareness of this horrific slaughter and increase pressure on the Canadian Government to end it.

To find out whether a protest is taking place in your area, please visit http://www.harpseals.org/opposition/unified.html .
Volunteers are still needed to plan demonstrations in front of Canadian Embassies or Consulates in many cities, so please get involved in organizing an event against the seal slaughter. Sea Shepherd can provide materials for your event, and encourage creative and unique ways to draw media attention to this issue.
For more information, call (360) 370-5650 or write michael [at] seashepherd.org.

5. Foie Gras Victories Mount

Three more restaurants have chosen to yank foie gras from their menus in the past week alone. As public perception of the controversial fatty duck liver dish rapidly shifts toward concerns over animal cruelty, activists have become increasingly successful at convincing prominent chefs and restaurateurs to lead their industry in a more compassionate direction. We are pleased to report the most recent accomplishments in the campaign against foie gras.

- Pamplemousse Grille, voted the #1 rated restaurant in San Diego on a 2004 Zagat survey, is the latest establishment to drop foie gras. Local animal advocates enjoyed presenting owner Jeff Strauss with a certificate of appreciation on Valentine's Day to commemorate his compassionate decision.
- Responding to pleas from animal advocates in Portland, Ore., the Liberator Brewing Company decided that diseased duck liver is not for lovers, and pulled foie gras from its Valentine's Dinner Gala menu at the last minute. They also released a written statement promising, in respect of their patron's wishes, to never serve foie gras again.
- Le Pommier recently became the tenth restaurant in the city of Pittsburgh to stop selling foie gras. Congratulations to Voices for Animals, a local advocacy group that has convinced restaurants in the area to make compassionate decisions. With such dedication and hard work, Pittsburgh will be foie gras-free in no time!

What You Can Do:

We are truly grateful to everyone who makes these important victories happen: the tireless activists who demonstrate outside of restaurants, the concerned patrons who tell restaurants how they feel about foie gras, and the restaurant owners who listen to the voice of their own conscience. Please write to the owners of the restaurants mentioned above and thank them for thinking of the ducks. Visit StopForceFeeding.com to learn how to start a campaign in your town.
