Israel and/or America Implicated in Killing of Rafik Harriri

by trinicenter
"This is the work of an intelligence service, not a small group," said Rime Allaf, Middle East analyst at London's Royal Institute of International Affairs.
By Sam Hamod, Ph.D.
informationclearinghouse.info

We must do as they do in other criminal cases, look at who had the most to gain from the assassination of Prime Minister Harriri. The Lebanese had a lot to lose, as did the Syrians (he was close to Bashir Al Assad, the leader of Syria), as did the other Arab countries in the region who saw him as a strong leader and a stabilizing force in Lebanese politics. On the other hand, Israel has wanted chaos in Lebanon, as has America, and both countries have been agitating to get Hezbollah outlawed and both America and Israel have wanted the Lebanese to oust Syria. In both cases, the Lebanese government has said, "NO," that Hezbollah is a respected part of Lebanese life and that Syria is there to protect Lebanon from Israeli aggression.

No matter where else you look, no one else had anything to gain except Israel and the U.S. because this death could cause some possible upset in Lebanese politics and life.

Most Middle East experts in the Arab and Muslim worlds believe Israeli hands were at work in the killing of former Prime Minister of Lebanon, Rafik Harriri.

America quickly pointed the finger at Syria, as did Israel, which was tantamount to convicting themselves because they are the only two countries that would gain by creating unrest in Lebanon. President Lahoud and Hezbollah, who represent two of the important factions of the Lebanese government both condemned the bombing and their own experts said the blast had all the earmarks of the bombing that was carried out by Israel against former Palestinian leaders in Beirut in the past.

America and Israel want Syria out of Lebanon, but the majority of Lebanese realize the Syrian presence is an aid to their country that helps stop the Israelis from once invading Lebanon (as Israel did in the 1980s, then stayed on in the south to occupy part of Lebanon until the Hezbollah ousted them by military force). Also, by killing Harriri, the Israelis and American can both claim that the area is more unstable and needs more American style "democracy" and occupation. Harriri was a giant among progressive Arab and Muslim leaders, and though he made money in Saudi Arabia and was friendly to the government, his attitude in Lebanon was very progressive and he made sure the church and state were kept separate in Lebanese political decisions.

Harriri was a man beloved by all sides, even his former political foes. They saw him as a man who had helped to bring Lebanon back from the chaos that Israel had caused with their falangist allies in the invasion of the 1980s. One must also remember that the man who wanted Lebanon destroyed, and who led the attack that destroyed all of Beirut was none other than the present prime minister of Israel, Ariel Sharon. Sharon has set up a special group of dark ops in Israel who are allowed to kill anyone who may be a threat to Israel in any land in the world—clearly a violation of International Law. Of course, Sharon, like Bush, has decided that International Law does not govern Israel’s or America’s selfish ambitions in the world.

Harriri’s killing, like so many of those in Iraq, is the work of either the Israeli dark ops or American mercenaries who have been hired out to kill people who are progressive in the Arab and Muslim worlds. That is why in Lebanon today, people know that it was not some dissident "Islamist group" (that no one has heard of, nor does anyone believe actually exists) who allegedly took credit for the deed, and in Iraq, where the religious leaders among the Sunni and Shi’a are telling their people not to revenge themselves on one another, because they know the killings are professional jobs being done by people from outside Iraq, namely, Israel and America. The parallels are evident to experts, but these experts will not be allowed on American media. But, Professor Rime Allaf, of the Royal Institute in England is correct, this was the work of an intelligence agency—and we damn well know who the only two would be—because they are the only two to gain by this deed, Israel or America.

Remember, as I stated earlier, in criminal acts, one must always look to who has the most to gain—in this case, it was clearly the Bush team and Israel. And, as Rime Allaf said, this was the work of "an intelligence agency."

It’s time these killings in Iraq, in Lebanon, and even the assassination of the Prime Minister of Georgia, a foe of American oil pipelines, be stopped, and that the world set up an investigation team to look into these matters because they create more chaos and misery for the world.

"Former Lebanese PM Assassinated"

A car bomb took the life of Lebanon 's former prime
minister Rafik Al-Hariri today. It would not be the first
time that Israel has, directly or indirectly, has targeted
Arab leaders to keep its neighbouring countries in turmoil.
During its invasion of Lebanon in the1980 s, the Zionists
used their Christian proxy, Phalangists, to assassinate
several Lebanese leaders, both Muslims and Christians.
Israeli Mossad has always been considered the possible ‘key
player’ behind the scene in the following murders:

March 1977 - Druze leader Kamal Jumblatt is killed in
ambush in his Shouf mountain fiefdom in central Lebanon .
June 1978 - Tony Franjieh, son of former President Suleiman
Franjieh, is assassinated in raid by rival militias at his
home in Ehden, north Lebanon .

September 1982 - Bashir Gemayel, elected president, is
killed before taking office by a bomb. His brother Amin
becomes president.

June 1987 - Lebanon 's veteran Prime Minister Rashid Karami
is killed by a bomb in an army helicopter in Tripoli .
Karami was serving his ninth term as prime minister in a37 -
year career.

May 1989 - Grand Mufti Sheikh Hassan Khaled, religious head
of Lebanon 's Sunni community, is killed by a car bomb in
Beirut . The blast killed 22 people and wounded80 .

November 1989 - President Rene Muawad is killed in a huge
bomb explosion in Beirut .

October 1990 - Gunmen killed Dany Chamoun, chairman of the
National Liberal Party, in a Beirut suburb.

February 1992 - Israelis killed Abbas Mussawi, a Hizbullah
leader, in helicopter ambush of his convoy near village of
Jibsheet in south Lebanon .

January 2002 - Elie Hobeika, former minister and leader of
pro-Israeli militia involved in 1982 massacre of
Palestinian refugees in Lebanon , is killed in Beirut .

May 2002 - Mohammad Jihad Ahmad Jibril, son of Ahmad
Jibril, leader of Popular Front for the Liberation of
Palestine General-Command (PFLP-GC), is killed in car bomb
in Beirut.

Just imagine!
Late Hariri`s consultant: Hariri`s assassination by Mossad aimed
at creating tension in Lebanon
Tehran, Feb 15, IRNA -- Late Lebanese politician Rafiq Hariri`s
consultant Mustafa al-Naser told IRNA Monday evening, "Assassination
Hariri is the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad`s job, aimed at
creating political tension in Lebanon."
Al-Naser added, "Beyond doubt, the peace, stability, and high
level security prevailing in Lebanon in recent years, in creation of
which all Lebanese groups play a harmonious role, is in direct
contrast with Israel`s political intentions for the region, and above
that with the illegitimate nature of that usurper regime."
He added, "Israel seeks the continuation of its existence in
creation of constant tension in the region, and that was the reason
why Tel Aviv imposed many years on civil war, and over a decade of
occupation and instability against our nation."
Lebanon`s five-time prime minister and billionaire tycoon Rafiq
Hariri was assassinated in a huge bomb blast in Beirut Monday that
stoked fears of fresh sectarian strife 15 years after the end of the
civil war.
About 100 people were also wounded in the blast that left a
trail of carnage and devastation in a busy seafront area in scenes
reminiscent of the 1975-1990 war.
Media reports said the blast was caused by a car bomb and a
hitherto unknown Zionist group claimed responsibility for what it
said was a suicide attack to avenge Hariri`s close ties with the
Islamic world.
The dead included one of the bodyguards of the 60-year-old
Sunni billionaire who resigned as prime minister four months ago.
The attack plunged Lebanon into grief and raised worries about the
stability of the country, which is treading a delicate path between
its Sunni, Shi`a and Christian communities.
Lebanon has announced three days of national mourning, and Hariri`s
family has announced they want to bury him privately, forbidding
he presence of any government official in his burial ceremony.
Hariri had launched a comprehensive construction campaign in
Lebanon and owed much of his popularity in his country to his lofty
contribution to effective reconstruction of his war torn country.

Er...Why would a Mossad agent blow himself up? Suicide bombingis the gift the Arabs have given to the world. The victim was a moderate who sought ties with Israel...As well as wanting the brutal syrian military OCCUPATION to end after 30 years...

No matter what happens, you stupid morons always blame Israel

Once in a while, due to the laws of probability, you're right

You should talk to your KKKlan leaders and see about getting mental therapy
by Joe
SirLaughaLot,

It's not shocking for middle east muslims to just blame israel for everything as they always do.

But what's diappointing is now antisemites who have infiltrated the "peace" movements are convincing people to do the same thing

by blaming
Blaming Israel or the US offhand does suggest irrational bias but the same goes for blaming Syria which will lose the most as a result of the bombing.
by Critical Thinker
I've seen a few comments on an Israeli news site by a few dolts who reasoned that the assassination must have been a Mossad job.
by Sefarad

I have read that the Syrian intelligence had to know the murder was being to be committed.

But putting the blame on Israel (and the US) diverts the attention from the fact that the Syrians are occupying Lebanon, that they are occupying that country since they invaded it to help the PLO make ethnical cleansing with the Lebanesse Christians and destroy democracy.

I like how this author discovers the true killers by using his powerful reasoning processes. Syria could not be responsible, he tell us. Because Hariri had such a close relationship with the Syrian leader.

Nevermind that there are 15,000 Syrian troops occupying Lebanon right now. Never mind that the current prime minister was kept in office beyond his term due to Syrian pressure and interference in Lebanese politics. Never mind that Hariri had himself quit in disgust last fall and vowed to run for office this coming spring on an anti-Syrian occupation platform.

No Syria COULDN'T have done it, so, by a matter of elimination, it must be Israel and the USA!! And this is reasonable because the USA and Israel only want to see turmoil in Lebanon. That must also be why Israel keeps proposing peace treaties with its Arab neighbors. Because of all the turmoil talk of peace creates!! Those clever Israelis! They just want to rile up the Arabs by talking about peace all the time, knowing full well it will only provoke the Arabs to attack them! They planned it all along!!

Just like the mossad planned the 9/11 attacks in the USA to make the Arabs look bad. A Palestinian Iman explained to his congregation that the Tsunami was God's retribution for all the Jewish and American investment in the Indian Ocean resorts.

Never mind that the vast majority of those who suffered and died were Muslims.

Personally, I will wait until I hear the evidence before I conclude who assasinated Hariri. In the meantime, Syria is high on my short list of suspects.

Joseph Anderson has sort of taken me on in some kind of pissing contest. You are certainly welcome to read the links he has provided to many of my writings regarding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the peace movement in Northern California.

Sadly, Joseph needs to hurl unseemly invectives at me, each time trying to top his last accusation for shock value and rudeness. At least that is my impression of the nature of his attacks. I invite the reader to read both his comments and mine and make up their own mind.

I claim no particular expertise in this area. I am not Jewish or Muslim. I have never been to Israel. I, like many in the peace movement, largely get my information through reading accounts by others, and perhaps by interviewing people who are far more knowledgable than myself.

I HAVE been studying the Torah and Jewish law for the past three years, and to some extent this has influenced how I think.

I find that I am in disagreement with many who post on indymedia regarding Israel and the Palestinians. I note that here, the tabs in the left column have "Palestine" but not "Israel". To me, this indicates a framework of non-acceptance of the Jewish State of Israel as a legitimate sovereign body.

This concept alone (That Palestine is the true land, and that the Israelis are just occupiers) permeates Indymedia and can, in itself, lead to prolonged warfare, death, and human suffering. Israel is here. It exists. Its not going away. Get used to it. The shortest path to peace is for the "Peace movement" to recognize the right of the Jewish State of Israel (a democracy) to exist with secure borders and in security. And begin to help negotiations with Arab peoples (not just the Palestinians) to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region.

Call me a whacko, that's what I believe.

DAFKA does attend anti-Israel events and report on them. Lee Kaplan of DAFKA, just spoke at Columbia University as an invited speaker on Feb. 17th. He has gone undercover to report on how the ISM trains its volunteers to circumvent Israeli law.

After hearing a Syrian ambassador speak, I do not know who should be blamed but I do not think Syria had anything to do with it. Why would they want to commit such an act that would only go to cause them more problems then they already have? they would have nothing at all to gain. Without Hezbollah Israel would try to take land in the north, just as they have been taking the Palestinian land in the West Bank and Gaza for their own use without any thought to what it is doing to the Palestinian People.
The best way to solve this conflict in the Middle-East is to allow the Palestinian People to have the Borders of their State which is called for in the Road Map to Peace finalized, thereby ending the reason for the conflict. Once this has been done and the True Borders for Israel inside its pre 1967 (Green Line) borders, Palestine in the West Bank and Gaza, Lebanon with its southern borders firmly in place and guarded by the Lebanese. Then maybe the need for Hezbollah in Lebanon will no longer be needed. Once Lebanon has secure borders that the Israelis cannot cross over into, Hezbollah can return to Syria and help serve as part of the Syrian Military to protect Syria from attack or aggression. Why do we choose to close our eyes to the way the Middle East sees the problem and only look at the Israelis as victims even though they are the ones who are doing the Occupying and Oppressing? Israel is spending a small fortune on a wall/fence/ barrier, why not put it on the green line where it can be permanent and do some good instead of putting it inside the West Bank where the Future Palestinian State should be and it only go to make the conflict worse. Why don’t Lebanon and Syria build a Wall/fence/barrier on their Southern border that way the border will be defined and no one can dispute it if Israel tries to grab land past the Wall/fence/barrier.

Report: Syria planned Hariri murder

BEIRUT, Lebanon

Officials at the highest levels in Syria and Lebanon organized the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, according to the Kuwaiti newspaper a-Siasa.

The report revealed that two high-ranking Syrian generals – including Syrian president Bashar Assad's brother-in-law, Brig. Gen. Asef Shawkat, whom he appointed Friday to head military intelligence – and a Lebanese general.

The newspaper did not reveal the sources of the report.

The Lebanese and Syrian governments have denied any role in the death of Hariri, who was killed by a massive bomb as he was driven in his motorcade through central Beirut. The blast killed 16 other people and wounded more than 100.

The murder of Hariri, a politician who was seen as a key figure in applying international pressures to effect Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon, was evidently intended as a bloody warning to the Lebanese to think twice before demanding that Syrian troops pull out, the report commented.

Over the weekend Lebanese opposition stepped up its campaign against the country's pro-Syrian government Friday, calling for a "peaceful intifada" to force the resignation of Prime Minister Omar Karami and the withdrawal of the Syrian army from Lebanon.

Since Hariri's murder, the anti-Syrian Lebanese opposition has blamed the government and its Syrian backers for the assassination. Friday the opposition issued a statement calling on people to stage a peaceful "independence uprising" against the government.

In its statement, the opposition said the government should resign and a transitional Cabinet should be formed "to protect the people, and to ensure an immediate and full withdrawal of the Syrian army from Lebanon as a prelude for free and fair elections." Parliamentary elections are due to be held in April and May.

The statement - which was read out by Samir Franjieh, a second cousin of the interior minister - also urged Lebanese to continue to gather daily at Hariri's grave in Martyrs' Square in Beirut, to light candles and say prayers.

Shortly after the rebellious declaration, about 1,000 opposition supporters staged an anti-Syria rally in front of parliament, a few blocks from Hariri's grave. They carried placards reading "Syrians out now" and chanted anti-Syrian slogans. Security forces watched but did not interfere, and the protesters dispersed peacefully.

Expressing their mourning and deference to Hariri, thousands of people signed a 30 meter (90 ft.) banner with the word "Resign," written in French and Arabic, addressed to the government. The banner was unfurled at Hariri's grave, situated outside of a Beirut mosque that he had built.

Responding to the protests which have steadily grown in fervor over the past few days, Interior Minister Suleiman Franjieh warned the government would not tolerate any public disturbances. "The state will not stand idly by," he warned.

Meanwhile, in the first cabinet fallout from Monday's assassination, Tourism Minister Farid Khazen resigned Friday, saying the government was not capable of running the country at this crucial stage.

The departure of a minister close to pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud caused surprise, but was not expected to cause the government to collapse. Prime Minister Karami quickly appointed a new tourism minister, Wadih Khazen, who is not related to his predecessor.

"Any minister who resigns will be promptly replaced," Karami said, signaling the government's determination to stay in office.

Hariri's family, as well as France and the United States, have called for an international enquiry into his killing. Karami's government has rejected these calls, but it has commissioned foreign experts, such as Swiss forensic scientists, to assist its investigation.

The assassination has also increased pressure on Syria to withdraw its 15,000 soldiers from Lebanon. On Thursday US President George W. Bush said he would encourage his European allies to put pressure on Syria to withdraw from Lebanon.

Report: Syrian officers planned killing of Lebanon's Hariri

By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent and AP

Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Seyassah reported Saturday that the killing of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik al-Hariri was planned in the highest echelons of the Syrian military.

According to the report, two Syrian generals, one of whom is the brother-in-law of President Bashar Assad, and one Lebanese general were behind the decision to assassinate Hariri.

Assad had recently appointed one of the officers allegedly involved in the assassination, Brigadier General Asef Shawkat, 54, to the position of military intelligence chief. The other Syrian officer is security chief Jamal Sa'id.

The Kuwaiti newspaper reports that the senior-ranking officers had blamed Hariri for a United Nations resolution calling on Syria to pull out of Lebanon, and had given the order to kill him.

Erdan asks AG to probe Tibi's Beirut visit
Likud MK Gilad Erdan said Saturday that he plans to ask Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to launch an investigation into Hadash-Ta'al MK Ahmed Tibi's trip to Beirut.

Tibi traveled to Lebanon on Saturday for a consolation visit with Hariri's grieving family without attaining the Interior Ministry's permission, as the law requires in all such cases.

"How long will Israel allow its elected officials to be paid by the public, when they are cooperating with the enemies of the state?" Erdan said, during an interview with Army Radio.

Tibi had said earlier in a radio interview from Beirut that the visit was a spontaneous and human act and thus he didn't seek permission.

Opposition in Lebanon demands 'independence uprising'
Opposition figures urged the Lebanese to join an "independence uprising" against Syria's grip on their country on Friday, escalating a war of words following Hariri's assassination.

Hariri's killing in Beirut on Monday sparked anti-Syrian fury among many Lebanese and renewed world pressure on Damascus to loosen its political grip and remove its troops from Lebanon.

Interior Minister Suleiman Franjieh warned Friday that the government would not tolerate any public disturbances. "The state will not stand idly by," he warned.

Tourism Minister Farid al-Khazen resigned in a further sign of political turbulence and Syria named a new military intelligence chief.

Khazen, a Maronite Christian, became the first minister to quit because of the assassination and said he had done so because the Syrian-backed government was unable to "remedy the dangerous situation in the country.

"There is no substitute for national dialogue on the basis of the Taif agreement," he said, referring to the deal that ended the 1975-1990 civil war and committed Syria to moving the troops it keeps in Lebanon to the eastern Bekaa Valley.

Druze leader Walid Jumblatt and figures from the disparate opposition movement blamed the government and its Syrian backers for Hariri's death and called for its resignation.

After meeting on Friday, they urged Lebanese to back a peaceful "independence uprising" - the first time they had used the term.

Parliament must also suspend all debate unrelated to the assassination, they told a news conference, until the truth about who killed Hariri emerged.

"This isn't just the opposition," Jumblatt earlier told reporters. "All the Lebanese are with Hariri, a free Lebanon and Syrian withdrawal." Hariri moved towards a similar position in the months before his death.

It was not immediately clear what form of protest the uprising would take.

Protesters set fire to the tents of Syrian farm workers near the northern town of Tripoli, the latest attack on Syrians in Lebanon. No injuries were reported.

UN to send team led by top Irish police officer to probe killing
Secretary-General Kofi Annan is sending a team led by Ireland's deputy police commissioner to Beirut in the next few days to investigate the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, the UN spokesman announced Friday.

Annan's decision to send the team is in response to a request from the UN Security Council that he urgently report on "the circumstances, causes and consequences" of Hariri's killing, the spokesman's statement said.

"The team will make contact with Lebanese officials and others to gather such information as necessary for the secretary-general to the council in a timely manner," the statement said.

Peter Fitzgerald, the team leader, has been a deputy Irish police commissioner since 1998 and has worked in UN peacekeeping operations in Namibia and Cambodia and was police commissioner in Bosnia until February 1997. He also served as a member of the independent team that investigated security at UN headquarters in Baghdad before the Aug. 19 bombing that killed 22 people and injured over 160.

Assad replaces chief of military intelligence
Syrian President Bashar Assad replaced the chief of military intelligence with his brother-in-law on Friday, a Syrian official said. The new chief is the former deputy head of military intelligence, Brig. Gen. Asef Shawkat, 54.

The official said the change was a "natural" succession within the military. It seems that the appointment was made as part Syria's changing diplomatic policies, following the assassination of Hariri.

The chief of military intelligence oversees all of Syria's domestic and foreign intelligence operations, including activities in Lebanon where Syria has some 15,000 Syrian troops and many intelligence agents.

The outgoing chief, Gen. Hassan Khalil, 65, had passed retirement age and his retirement had been previously postponed more than once, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Shawkat is married to Assad's sister, Bushra. Shawkat is close to Assad and recently emerged as a top presidential adviser on security matters. Assad's move indicates that he is consolidating his hold on the security services. It is likely that Shawkat's appointment is intended to relay the message that Assad plans to tighten his control on what goes on in Lebanon, and not allow a further deterioration in the country's political situation.

The killing of Hariri in a massive bomb blast in central Beirut on Monday provoked an unprecedented level of criticism against Syria's presence in Lebanon. Senior Lebanese opposition figures accused Syria of responsibility - a charge that Syria flatly rejected. Thousands marched in Hariri's funeral on Wednesday behind banners that said: "Syria Out."

The United States withdrew its ambassador to Damascus, giving the assassination as the immediate cause, and the UN Security Council passed a resolution reminding Syria that it was obliged to implement a previous council resolution that called for the withdrawal of foreign forces from Lebanon.

On Thursday, U.S. President George W. Bush said he will work with his European allies to put pressure on Syria to pull out from Lebanon, saying Syria "is out of step" with progress being made in the Middle East.

Earlier this month, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul D. Wolfowitz questioned whether Assad was fully in control of Syria, four years after he assumed power on the death of his father, President Hafez Assad.

Since Bashar Assad came to power in 2000, his government has touted a range of political and economic reforms. But he has also been pressured by the old guard in the ruling Baath Party, holdovers from the three decades of iron rule under his father.

Syria has dominated Lebanon with its army and intelligence forces since Syrian troops first entered the country in the second year of the civil war of 1975-90.

So I guess Sam Hamod, Ph.D was completely wrong in his knee-jerk reaction to exonerate Syria and implicate the USA and....who else??....ISRAEL!!

Careful who you run with folks!

I have just read that Syria is trying to prevent an investigation over the murder.

Thanks for the link. I find the site to be very interesting and will often visit it.
by who?
Iran probably tops the list since the threats to Syria have forced Syria to agree to defend each other in case of attack. Before the bombing there was little chance of a US attack on Syria (or veen really more sanctions) but now there will at least be sanctions if another link cannot be proven.

Islamists who hate both Syria and wouldnt have minded killing a secular Lebanese leader come in second. Syria is not well liked among the most fundamentalist Islamic groups (because of massacres like Hama) and a destabilized Syria could create a lawless region Al Qaeda and othe rsuch groups could thrive in from the Gulf to the Mediteranian. The lesson fundamentalists learned from Iraq was that a US invasion would bring less rather than more constraints on actions of fundamentalist groups. While a US invasion of Syria is highly unlikely just because of one bombing, the fundamentalists dont always make the most logical of judgement calls.

Lebanese Christain militas are the third most likely suspect. They will gain the most because of this and it looks like they may get their desire to have Syria pushed out met.

In fourth place for most to gain I guess would be Israel and the US also that this allows them to put more pressure on Syria to crack down on Palestinian groups in Syria.

Syria is a guess a suspect too but it makes little sense unless it ws a desire to intimidate opposition forces in Lebanon (which is not what happened). It could be some rogure elements in Syria that had other aims (like destabilizing the current government) but Lebanese Christains, Iran, Islamists and Israel all gained more from the assasination.
by sure
"Syria is trying to prevent an investigation over the murder. "

They have a lot of other things that want hidden that could be foudn out via such an investigate. I would bet they didnt carry out the assasination and want to prevent an investigation for the same reason Saddam stood in the way of nuclear inspectors (other things to hide plus national pride)
