Emergency SCRAP News Conference set for Mon. Feb. 14, 10am

WHO: Santa Cruzans for Responsible Development, a local grassroots organization, backed by former Santa Cruz Mayors who will be present and other community notables;

WHAT: Will participate in a news conference to announce the official kickoff for a community-wide referendum campaign to halt the single largest development since the University: the 270 room hotel, 6-level parking garage, 23,000 square foot Conference Center project. Brief statements will be made by special invited guests, media packets will be available, and questions from the news media will be taken;

Don Lane, former Mayor, and consultant for the S.C. Coast Hotel project, will be speaking on Bathrobespierre's Broadsides Sunday February 13 at 10 AM. He will answer questions by phone (831-427-3772) and via the chatroom (http://www.Pagesincolor.com).

Lane recently acknowledged publicly that he was paid $1200 by hotel supporters to back the hotel project.

All across the country, cities and towns have been stuggling to function on reduced revenue due to the economic hard times caused by the dot.com crash post 9/11. Many cities, such as San Jose, have built expensive convention and conference centers to try to bring in more revenue.

Most have had disappointing returns, most notably San Jose which has only a third the revenue their Redevelopement Agency hacks predicted they would net.

Our city cannot afford to take on $30 million in debt to fund a for-profit hotel offering rooms for as high as $350 a night.

We have no business putting the city at that kind of risk. RDA funds by law must address blight (the West Coast hotel may be ugly, but its not blighted) and to build the affordable housing our community so desparately needs.
