Michael Jackson's self-destructive hubris

Concerning the upcoming Michael Jackson trial, people often ask
"Is he guilty?
Did he do it?"

Those are the wrong questions,
which arise out of ignorance about pedophilia.


Here are a few questions and answers.

--- WHAT do most child molesters actually do?

The average adult (that is, those who wrongly rely on TV for so-called "news") doesn't even know what physical acts would constitute a crime in California.

If they thought about it, they might imagine that the typical male
child-molester tries to insert an erect adult penis into the small anus or vagina of a pre-pubescent child; causing certain pain and probable damage.
While such physically brutal crimes do occur, these are rare.
Most of California's convicted child molesters have been found guilty of masturbating a child's genitals, or of applying the man's mouth to the child's genitals; or of having the child touch or fellate the man's penis.
[ I speak here only of MALE offenders; as convicted female offenders are so rare that one cannot generalize about them. ]

Media reports rarely specify the alleged acts, preferring vague legalistic terms like "sexual assault". So the public cannot distinguish between fondlers and rapists.

--- Which offenders avoid arrest or conviction?
Do YOU know a molester?

The public tends to think that all child molesters and pedophiles
are equally evil;
and to assume that televised cases are average cases.
"Those monsters", they conclude, "deserve death, after castration.
There should be grateful if a merciful society merely gives them life imprisonment."

EXCEPT, of course, when the offender is a person in their own family,
or in their own circle of friends.
In such a case, they learn the actual facts.
Then some of them may say, "Well, Joe is mentally ill,
and he needs treatment,
but Joe's not like THOSE monsters."

Indeed, MOST instances of child-molesting NEVER come to the attention of the police. Most molestations are "family secrets",
kept hidden for decades, and possibly forever.

So most adults think
"I've never met a child-molester."
But that perception may be an illusion created by ignorance.
The molesters whom you read about are a small minority of the ACTUAL offenders.

-- What happens to molesters who are arrested?

Once an ordinary offender is arrested,
he's assumed to be guilty. By everyone.

IF he's the financial support of his family, and IF they want him to continue in that role, and IF his offenses involved only hIs "own" children (as if children were property), then his family MAY try to help him get a plea bargain.

If not, then he'd better have money to hire a good private lawyer,
who will try to negotiate the shortest deasible prison term.
He'd better NOT rely on a public defender --
since even his own lawyer (public or private) may hate him.

If he doesn't get a good plea bargain,
a nonviolent molester may serve more time than the average killer.
In one historic case, a California man was imprisoned for many years because he stroked the hair on the head of a girl,
in a movie theater.

That's the ordinary arrested man --
NOT the man who has powerful protectors;
and/or geat wealth, and/or millions of fans.

If his legal team is really good, then we're NOT likely to find out. Remember the O.J. trial?

--- Why is Michael Jackson still living in the USA?

Around a decade ago, there was a scandal concerning his alleged relationship with another boy. Charges weren't pressed.
After that, almost every adult (except a few love-blinded fans) could see that MJ has severe psychological problems; including a romantic attraction toward young boys.
His advisors should have understood that, given an opportunity, he might act on those emotions. They should have advised him to move to the Netherlands.
Maybe they did so advise, maybe not.
At any ratem MJ stubbornly stayed in California.
By staying here, he doomed himself.

--- Why leave the USA?

In the Netherlands, MJ could have sought psychotherapy;
IF he wanted to change, control, or moderate his actions.

As for changing his feelings, that would be more difficult.
(Like, try to cure heterosexuality...)

PERHAPS it would have been possible for him
to learn how to love boys of 15 or 16 (instead of 9 or 10);
thus bringing his desires into line with the laws of many
European countries (and Canada).


In California, a pedophile would be foolish to seek psychotherapy
(until after conviction),
since state law requires his therapist to inform on him.

In the Netherlands, even if MJ didn't change,
and even if he were arrested,
the penalties would be milder.

--- Does MJ seek to be destroyed?
Does he think he's untouchable?

The great mystery of Oscar Wilde is
"why did he seek self-destruction?"
He himself filed a civil lawsuit, which eventually led to his criminal prosecution.
Indeed, why did this bisexual man bother to live in England?
He could have lived in France, where the Napoleonic Code didn't criminalize male/male sex.
Did he desire martyrdom?


If MJ doesn't seek to be a "martyr",
then does he think he's invulnerable?
That would be an extreme example of HUBRIS.

In a sense, by staying in California,
and thereby inviting prosecution,
MJ has already doomed himself.


Yes, he may win the trial, as OJ did.
But during the trial,
evidence will turn many of his fans against him.

If he's acquitted, then he'll be like OJ
-- not in prison,
yet despised by almost everyone.

were to dare to do so,
here's the take-home lesson from the Jackson mess:

IF you don't commit suicide here,
and IF you're not already in prison ---
THEN you should move to the Netherlands, ASAP,
and seek psychotherapy there.

I have no sympathy for MJ.

Neither do I have any sympathy for the so-called
"criminal justice system" of California.

I write this commentary in hopes of presenting a few facts.
