Winter of Love, one year later
Feb. 12, Saturday: Around 3,000 queers celebrate one-year anniversary of our 2004 Winter of Love, at SF City Hall.
THE BATTLE OVER SAME-SEX MARRIAGE:
ONE YEAR LATER
Joy, gratitude mark anniversary of San Francisco's gay marriages
Rona Marech, Chronicle Staff Writer
Sunday, February 13, 2005
A crowd of 3,000 gay men and lesbians packed into the San Francisco City Hall rotunda
on Saturday [F 12] for a raucous event that became as much a pep rally for the mayor as a commemoration of the same-sex marriages that were performed in the same venue one year ago.
"Happy anniversary," Mayor Gavin Newsom said to the cheering audience. Unquestionably the star of the party that one celebrant compared to a "family reunion," the mayor was repeatedly drowned out by wild applause during the defiant speech he delivered from the rotunda staircase.

[ Comment by TBL:
(1) Get ready for state-wide vote(s)
on this issue,
in California,
during 2005-2006.
(2) In my queer opinion,
most of the credit should go to lawyers,
both queer and non-queer,
who have been fighting marriage-rights cases in courts
(at least since Hawai'i);
and to activists (at least since the 1970s).]
