Fellow Reformers:
Just a brief email now - to let you know that the Drug Policy Alliance
will be hosting the next international drug policy reform conference -
in Long Beach, California (close to L.A.). It will start on Wednesday
eve, November 9 and end Saturday evening, November 12. I anticipate
this will be the most significant drug policy reform gathering ever
convened in the United States.
We intend this conference to be very much the conference of the drug
policy reform movement, with DPA hosting and organizing it, but with
dozens of drug policy reform and other organizations playing roles as
co-sponsors. We are reserving blocks of time as well as rooms so that
co-sponsors can hold their own staff, board and/or membership meetings.
An ARO meeting will take place one evening, and the Awards Banquet will
likely happen Saturday evening.
We've recruited Paula Santiago to play the role of DPA point person in
organizing the conference, working closely with Laura Kesselman, who did
such a fine job of organizing the DPA conference in New Mexico in 2001
and the Breaking the Chains conference in Los Angeles in 2002. Paula's
regular job is National Community Organizer at the Harm Reduction
Coalition, where she's organized virtually all of the national harm
reduction conferences (Cleveland in 1998, Miami in 2000, Seattle in 2002
and New Orleans in 2004). Paula will split her time between HRC and
DPA, with primarily responsibility for working with allied
organizations, assembling the agenda, and so on. Her email is
psantiago [at] drugpolicy.org. Many of you will hear from Paula shortly.
I am also delighted that Robert Field has made a major commitment of his
time and resources to help DPA host a truly movement building
conference.
You will receive much additional information in weeks to come. All
advice and suggestions, as well as commitments to making the most of
this conference, are most welcome.
