Berkeley Public Library in Crisis

The Library Director, Jackie Griffin, is attempting to construct a fully automated Library system that will introduce new technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) which will utterly change the way you will be able to use the library. RFID technology poses problems such as privacy threats, security weaknesses, and potential heath risks. It is opposed by the ACLU, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Library Users Association, and Save Our Libraries.

The Library director proposes to eliminate jobs designed to serve you, the patron, as well as cut books from the collection and reduce the variety of books bought in the future. Approximately 3,000 books have already been cut, as have nearly all of the TEEN Services. Her proposals already have and will continue to drastically increase the budget while severely cutting services for you.
(98% of the library budget comes from city property taxes)

When the Library was aware of a $600,000 deficit LAST year, why did it decide to spend over $600,000 to implement a new automated system? Why are staff who make $15,000 a year being laid off when supervisors (including the Library Director) are getting pay raises? What can be done to Save the Library?

Your library will be completely altered unless you voice your opinion. Act now…
Exercise your democratic rights on this issue while you still can
