Ward Churchill Comes Under Fire as He Prepares to Speak at College in New York
Prof. Churchill is scheduled to speak at Hamilton College in New York this Thursday, and family members of people who died in the 911 incidents have been protesting his right to speak.
University of Colorado Boulder Professor and longtime American Indian activist Ward Churchill has come under increasing criticism recently because of his exposure of fundamental yet controversial questions about September 11th and his political view of why such events occur and could occur again. Prof. Churchill is scheduled to speak at Hamilton College in New York this Thursday, and family members of people who died in the 911 incidents have been protesting his right to speak. At issue are Churchill's speeches and book entitled "On the Justice of Roosting Chickens." On January 31st he resigned his post as Chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies, but not his professorship — because he did not want the attention focused on him to reflect on fellow department members.
Churchill is scheduled to speak on a panel at Hamilton College in New York this Thursday along with Hamilton philosophy professor Richard Werner and Colorado University ethnic studies professor Natsu Saito (who, the AP points out, is Churchill's wife). Hamilton College has stated that "The opportunity to encounter and respond to people from outside the college community in their intensity and their immediacy is among the key attributes of a liberal education. The views of speakers are their own. We expect, as a matter of civil discourse, that the members of this academic community, as well as visitors, respect the dignity of reasoned and principled debate." Voices of September 11 has stated, "We are extremely disturbed that Hamilton College has intentionally provide a platform for an individual whose viewpoints could compromise the emotional and psychological well being of individuals in its community," as one student at the school is the son of a man who died in the World Trade Center in 2001. The Interim Chancellor of the University benignly stated on January 27th , "I wish to make it clear that Professor Ward Churchill’s views of the events of 9/11 are his own and do not represent the views of University of Colorado faculty, staff, students, administration or Regents. While I may personally find his views offensive, I also must support his right as an American citizen to hold and express his views..." It has come to light that Hamilton College will be conducting a review of the Kirkland Project for the Study of Gender, Society and Culture, which is the organization that is bringing Churchill to speak on campus: "The College is still supporting Ward Churchill coming, but because of its timing, this review could send the signal that it doesn't support the Kirkland Project. So it looks like a veiled attack on free speech," current Kirkland Project director Nancy Rabinowitz stated.
In defense of "Some People Push Back: On the Justice of Roosting Chickens," Churchill says "...if U.S. foreign policy results in massive death and destruction abroad, we cannot feign innocence when some of that destruction is returned. I have never said that people "should" engage in armed attacks on the United States, but that such attacks are a natural and unavoidable consequence of unlawful U.S. policy." In his January 31st statement, Churchill acknowledged that some people do not agree with his analysis of the situation: "...Some people will, of course, disagree with my analysis, but it presents questions that must be addressed in academic and public debate if we are to find a real solution to the violence that pervades today's world. The gross distortions of what I actually said can only be viewed as an attempt to distract the public from the real issues at hand and to further stifle freedom of speech and academic debate in this country."

You are distorting the facts. "Academic freedom" means that a teacher can teach what he wants about the subject he is hired to teach. That's it. Nothing more. "Academic freedom" does NOT, and never did, mean that an academic has the freedom to say anything, anywhere, anytime with no consequences. When an academic makes unpopular statements, no one is required to let him speak just because he has "academic freedom". This guy was invited to speak on a campus. Then it became public that he said something most people don't like. Those people have every right to tell him to go blow smoke. There are consequences to your actions.
Recently Ward Churchill's scheduled appearance in SF bookstore/publisher City Lights was changed to a different date. This may not be for the same reason as the college cancellation, either way another day went by that his message wasn't heard and/or discussed in a public forum..
After reading some of Ward Churchill's books i understand why certain individuals hate his message. Anyone who talks about return of native people's land and sovereignty upfront and real is bound to anger those in the status quo with the most to lose. Acknowledging acts of genocide committed against indigenous people by US government and corporations also means some corporate/government officials may be held accountable. Next everyday people are told by mainstream media that we will be forced to swim back to Europe where we came from if we return any land to indigenous peoples. This scare tactic is perpetuated by wealthy corporate landowners and their politician puppets. Their real fear is risk of losing profit from some mining corporation located on native lands in violation of treaty..
My interpretation of Ward's message is along the lines that by collectively admitting US corporate colonialism is ethically wrong whether in North America, Iraq or elsewhere, people around the Earth can come together in common ground of healthy water, air, food and community. No more imperialism needed..
Censorship of Ward Churchill is like America collectively shooting itself in the foot..

AIM has already denounced him over this issue. It's their right to do so as it's his right to mock the dead office workers in New York and Virginia. To quote:
"Churchill’s statement that these people deserved what happened to them, and calling them little Eichmanns, comparing them to Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, who implemented Adolf Hitler’s plan to exterminate European Jews and others, should be condemned by all."
Sounds fair enough.
Churchill claims to be a Native American but isn't. That's sort of funny.

They keep repeating that, but it's not true. The situation was that he didn't know his father, but his father was a creek indian, and his mother is 1/4 cherokee. So he can't enroll in the creek tribe, but I don't think he really wanted to anyway.
You know, ethnicity, nationality and race are all different, and unless you're in South Africa or nazi germany or pre-1964 U.S., race hasn't been applied as a criteria for anyone, except for indian groups. And it is externally applied there. No one goes to a black skinned person with ancestors from Jamaica, who lives in england or Ireland and says 'you're posing. You're not really irish". My friend's housemate is a german but was adopted from Korea... but he certainly speaks german and has german nationality. Jewish people are allowed to be black or brazilian like my two jewish housemates.
Anyway, the U.S. law is untenable. The constitution specifically excluded indians from citizenship, and the declaration refers to them by the slur 'savages'. Indians were given dual citizenship in 1924 due to WWI participation, but they were always considered separate countries where treaties were signed between the U.S. and them (with coercion). yet... the U.S. still applies blood quantum laws so someone who is 1/16 a member of 16 tribes would no longer be considered an indian. Really, the navajo nation should be like Liechtenstein or Monte Carlo where it is a small country that determines its own rules.

I looked at him. I won't contradict anybody about his heritage as don't know what it is.
You can get into a very nice high school in Honolulu if you have the right blood these days.

In his own words:
"As to those in the World Trade Center . . .
Well, really. Let's get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break. They formed a technocratic corps at the very heart of America's global financial empire – the "mighty engine of profit" to which the military dimension of U.S. policy has always been enslaved – and they did so both willingly and knowingly. Recourse to "ignorance" – a derivative, after all, of the word "ignore" – counts as less than an excuse among this relatively well-educated elite. To the extent that any of them were unaware of the costs and consequences to others of what they were involved in – and in many cases excelling at – it was because of their absolute refusal to see. More likely, it was because they were too busy braying, incessantly and self-importantly, into their cell phones, arranging power lunches and stock transactions, each of which translated, conveniently out of sight, mind and smelling distance, into the starved and rotting flesh of infants. If there was a better, more effective, or in fact any other way of visiting some penalty befitting their participation upon the little Eichmanns inhabiting the sterile sanctuary of the twin towers, I'd really be interested in hearing about it."

Denial can consume us all collectively. Dissent. Ward is right in his essay, America is not a victim. You have no more right to live than anyone else, just because you're an American. Get of your Americentrism.

Oh wait a second, it's his gun. Did he go to a studio to pose? Let's see here, my Ray Bans or my Oakleys? Which is more street? Ha ha ha.
Why should I read his backpedaling? Here's his unambigious statement (and it's not about Pentagon workers):
"As to those in the World Trade Center . . . Well, really. Let's get a grip here, shall we? True enough, they were civilians of a sort. But innocent? Gimme a break."
If he went off like this in class that would be a different thing. I don't believe he has so you get into 1st Amendment/academic freedom issues if he were to be fired (as some people are calling for). However, his chairmanship is a different matter. He resigned already, fair enough.
Lastly, he is the one who claimed to be 1/16th Cherokee. Whether you care about this or not, this claim is a subject of some duspute.

Because of his ridiculous photos and his WTC building comment, I judge him. You are free to judge me. And the world will keep spinning regardless.
I think he looks COOL.
ward does compile extensive facts of american history and pre-history, atrocities carried out by the elite on anyone below them having a snowball effect. how these atrocities will surely boomerang...i agree, however his failure to include in his research the overwelming history of terrorism carried out by our government, on it's people in reguards to pretences for war. capitalism needs to expand, and much of u.s. industry has moved offshore, and wallstreet is teeterring with corruption. the illuminati will bring martial law by way of internal, and external conflict and economic collapse. "making a killing" as they call it. to do this one of the improtant ingredients is the provocature. one tactic, watch this hand and not the other. people trust ward because of the truths that he speaks but don't consider what he is not saying. he does not delineate the extent of disinformation given by the 911 commission and the bush ad respectively. people talk revolution, but they don't know who they are fighting, or for what pupose. i am from nj and have seen the spreading pollution all across the states, and the people only have fantasy for a future. violence willnot bring us peace it never has, the planet has gotten much smaller. and the elite still control it and its leaders. god help us all.
To the person that thinks he looks cool? Did you mean looks like a fool?
get a sense of humor. If you've heard one of his talk, you can see that it was a joke, just like everyone gets a picture for their stupid livejournal account that isn't like a class photo.
I don't understand whats all the hub bub about. The man has a right to free speech. He can say whats he wants whens he wants and hows he wants.
And peeples has a right to castigate him for it.
The End.

He could lose his job.
It seems he might lose his job for non academic freedom reasons.
I had assumed he had a PhD. I was wrong.

We all love to crazy and get all shocked when someone says something we collectively disagree with.
Come on now people these are just WORDS.
Now if I sent a flurry of insults your way, you wont get any bruises, cuts, or amputated arms.
So why is everybody freaking out?

why is it that when a minority makes a somewhat harsh criticism of something we ought to look inside ourselves and also use to understand we simply condemn ,if some people in the the world likes america less it isnt wards statement that make it true or false ,its americas relationship with those people.
if we take the time to understand his message unemotionally we might just learn something from it.
but i do remember the us technocrats being involved with the current number one terrorists so is saying it in a harsh way evil

Ward Churchill is not a minority. He has no tribal affiliation and the tribes, emphasis on the plural, he says he is a card carrying member have no record of him on their tribal documents. He has said that he is a Cherokee, a Keetoowah Cherokee, Muskogee, Creek and recently Meti. He was married to a native but she has since passed; the only Natives in his family are her relatives, not blood relation to him at all. Now, he is an "associate member" of the Keetoowah; but, so is Bill Clinton. So this man is going through an identity crisis and is giving Natives a bad name. To say such inhumane statements in the name of being Native is despicable and utterly deplorable...that is not what the majority of Natives stand for...now, I'm sure that the whole lot of ya' on this website fancy yourselves Native because your great grandmother was a cherokee princess and all, but you need to realize that Ward Churchill is a fraud and just because he says he's Native doesn't make it so! Get a reality check and stop hiding behind the 1st amendment because we are entitled to free speech, but I'm sure you wouldn't be shouting "Free Speech to support a white racist and allowing him to spew his venom like Churchill has done! I feel sorry that you are all so naive and were so easily dupped by such a horrific excuse for a human being!
The first amendment only describes how the government may not restrict free speech. That isn't what lets citizens speak out to each other. I can talk, you can tell me to shut up. And I can tell you to shut up.
Also, Russell Means yesterday was talking about how his twin brothers who had a different father or something weren't eligible for registration papers certifying that they are indian even though they grew up in the same family and clearly have the same culture and traditions and history. Are you going to say they are the default white, despite what they are, because they don't have a document? Who really cares about the census.

Seems to me that yes he an upopular idea from a large group of people and it sucks that he doesn't get to speak at some tiny ass college, but it's there choice not to let him speak. People do a lot of unfair things and that is life. People kill, murder, place each other in prison, rape, pillage, ect..... but it's a personal choice to be a victim. I don't think that MR. Churchill is a victim of the medi, college, or protesters. A lot of people seem to make it out that way. If he is truly a victim then it's a choice. Granted that I'm not saying that one can only be a victim by choice but if there are other options I say don't be a victim. Shit happens and life isn't fair. So what I wasn't blessed with good grammar and I don't get to babble on at a bunch of college student about how shitty the system is either. He will most likely have other opportunities to voice his message elsewhere and hopefully his message will be one with substance.
some radicals try to truck bomb the world trade towers. the "u.s." government allowes them to communicate with other murderous nuts, thereby encouraging such behavior, meanwhile the people in wtt are making a living in companies that make money by misleading the poor, then the "u.s." government allows a "suicide" attack. ( remember a passport comes out in almost pristene condition) i tend to lean more to churchills side than bushes. ( who ignroed the intelligence? 0
