Honoring our "Covenant of Compassion"
with Homeless People
All faith traditions, as well as the intrinsic goodness of the human heart, compel
us to stand firmly with our poor and homeless sisters and brothers in their hour of
suffering. This event will renew our compassionate spirit as we are dramatically
reminded of the profound suffering of the thousands of individuals in San Francisco
and throughout the Bay Area who have no homes.

A dramatic event featuring:
· Testimony of homeless individuals as told through their own moving poems
· Ritual response of religious leaders and rally participants
· Songs by the renowned Vocolot Ensemble
· Sacred dance
With open hearts and minds, we come together seeking a clearer picture of the state
of homelessness in San Francisco.
We do not question Mayor Newsom's personal commitment or that of his administration
to "end homelessness as we know it." However, we must continue to listen to the
voices of homeless people as they share their own perspective on the state of
homelessness .voices that are often excluded by much of the local media, especially
recently.
Currently it seems almost "unpatriotic" to question or criticize this
administration's efforts to solve homelessness. Yet, it is critical that we continue
to listen to the voices of homeless people. They are calling out to us to
acknowledge, with courage and integrity of heart, that the actual implementation of
"Care Not Cash" has many serious flaws. While this program has indeed placed
hundreds of homeless men and women in housing, it has, unfortunately, also
exacerbated the suffering of many other homeless people, both among those 2,000
homeless welfare recipients targeted by Care not Cash, as well as among the 13,000
other homeless individuals not on welfare.
We give credit where credit is due and protest that which is clearly unfair.
