Does CONDI have any sexual orientation?

Ann Rostow, of TXT Newsmagazine (former Texas Triangle??) [and SF Bay Times], speculates about
the sexual orientation of Condi Rice. [SFBT, 20 Jan, p.10.]
One biographer of Rice says that she used to "date" (?) football players;
and that she once considered marrying and having kids, but chose to pursue her foreign-policy career instead.

After she took the job of educating Bush the Lesser, she became an "office wife" to him;
once referring to him as "my husband", before correcting herself. This closeness must be entirely non-sexual,
since Laura Bush remains very close to Condi. Apparently Condi usually accompanies George & Laura to
Camp David, the weekend retreat for presidential families.

Altho Dr. Rice is a long-time hawk in foreign affairs, that's no reason to assume she's homophobic.

JUST HOW QUEER WAS ABE?
"How gay was Abraham Lincoln?
By asking the question that way, it's perhaps possible to avoid the historically futile,
binary question of "gay" versus "straight". [.....]
Whatever Lincoln was, he was very at ease expressing love, intimacy and affection for other men. The last thing he was was sexually prudish. His early doggerel poem about the progeny that results from anal sex with another man - he has the two men married no less! - would be regarded by today's conservatives as worthy of protest to the FCC. Does CLASSICAL MUSIC offend Brit thugs?

London's underground tube system was plagued by tough teen males, who bullied passengers and staff.
Now London has reduced such trouble, by one-third. How?

By playing classical music.

Most London teens don't care for such "rubbish", so now they're less likely to hang out in tube stations.

The same tactic works in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. One hotel, on a section of Market Street noted
for outdoor sales of pills, plays classical music at its doorway; which motivates most dealers to hang out elsewhere.

VALUE OF FLAWED IDEAS

In brainstorming sessions,
a flawed idea often sparks a workable idea.

Thus bad ideas are better than no ideas.

The bad-sparks-good process has been called dialectical.
One could also see it as
evolution in action.

CAL-SF: Friday, January 28, 6-9 PM:
opening reception for art show:
"HAIRY BODIES"
Featuring Nayland Blake, Nick Dong, Ruth Eckland, Su-Chen Hung, Chris Komater, Dean Smith, and Chris Vandemore. January 28 - February 26, 2005.
Gallery Hours: Wednesdays-Saturdays, 1-6 PM.
Hairy Bodies is a group exhibition inspired by the eroticisation and fetishization of large hairy men, otherwise know as bears. These artists explore and abstract this ideal of beauty, quite outside of the mainstream, through the mediums of video, photography, and installation. These sometimes playful and subversive works look at individual and group complexities, differences, and dynamics. Come for an intimate look at the strange beauty of bear hair, sexuality, and body aesthetics in all forms and possibilities. The Lab, 2948 16th Street near Mission.

Joan Roughgarden always repeats a story about how Condoleezza Rice was supportive when she was Dean as Stanford, and she was doing a transition to female. Her flaws are mainly in the morality of foreign policy. It's not to underestimate the oppression that millions of people are experiencing due to the republican right's policies with regards to homosexuality, but sometimes you wonder who is the motivation behind the policy. It is known that the Cheney's aren't so hardcore antigay, with their daughter, and once when Bush was in a situation w/o a teleprompter a few months ago, a journalist asked him about gay marriage, and what gay people with children and so forth should do legally to protect them, and he came out and said they should have a second category of civil union type of option that just isn't called marriage. The next day his staff had to play cleanup, to clarify that he really hadn't intended to express such a reasonable and tolerant position, and that really he is 100% civil unions

<<but sometimes you wonder who is the motivation behind the policy.>>

I don't think it's any great mystery.

The Republicans would be politically bereft without the votes of fundamentalist christians, who comprise between 25-35% of Americans who bother to vote.

The ruling class on the whole doesn't care much about the so-called "social issues." For every die-hard social conservative found among the ruling elite, my guess is you'd find ten or more who're liberal or agnostic on abortion, gay marriage, prayer in school, etc, etc.

The Dems and Repubs distinguish themselves most clearly on these "social issues" because questions of ownership of the economy are already settled and the elites of both parties--capitalists themselves--have no fundamental quarrel on such matters.

Seen in this light, "social issues" are chiefly a means to keep the plebes participating in the democratic charade, in so doing giving capitalist rule an appearance of popular sanction.

Most of the "social issues"
(except for guns?)
seem to be sexual issues....
by often discreetly tolerant?
From reading, I get the impression that the English upper class(es) try hard to appear proper; but privately tolerate those of their peers who happen to be queer, or otherwise sexually "improper".

U.S. upper class(es) are, of course, much more fluid and varied than those of England. (Indeed, one could ask whether Marx's view of class was sharpened by the rigidity of the (white) English class system, when he lived in England.)

In terms of mere wealth, self-made millionaires belong to the economic elite, just like heirs of "old money".

But in cultural terms, I think you could define an old-money (white Gentile male) elite as men who went to elite secondary boarding schools; and whose fathers also did so. [ Elite universities may be open
to the brightest of the lower classes; while secondary schools show class boundaries more clearly, IMHO.]

Such WASP elite men often belonged to the Episcopal Church;
often quietly disbelieving in its official doctrines, and being more liberal in their minds than in their public speech; perhaps being agnostics, but never saying so...

Once freed from medieval religious doctrines, a modern mind tends to value science and reason, and thus to favor tolerance in sexual matters.

If such men go into politics, they may be required to appear more sexually uptight than they really are.....
