Dichter: Far-right activists may create pretext to fire on troops
Far-right activists opposed to the dismantling of settlements are planning to create a pretext to open fire on soldiers during the evacuation, Shin Bet chief Avi Dichter told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Tuesday.
Dichter estimated that the activists number several dozen, and have the support of several hundred others.
Dichter said that one tactic the activists may use is the spreading of inflammatory rumors that would encourage settlers to open fire, such as false reports about security forces in other locations firing on settlers, or the existence of snipers directed by the Shin Bet to fire on particularly troublesome settlers.
Another possible tactic described by Dichter is the use of fake blood in order to create the effect of having been fired on.
Dichter said the activists are "characterized by an anti-government ideology that espouses the use of violence for the achievement of political and ideological aims."
The activists "have not abandoned the idea of targeting the [mosques on the] Temple Mount, have access to weapons and have no problem stealing weapons from the army, and are characterized by operational secrecy," Dichter added.
In response to a question for Labor MK Haim Ramon regarding the lack of administrative detention of far-right activists, Dichter said that all attempts to use administrative detention have failed the legal test.
Ramon called for far-right activists to be placed under house arrest. "Each day this is delayed places us in danger of a colossal disaster," said Ramon.
Also on Tuesday, far-right activists called on settlers resisting evacuation to wear Israel Defense Forces uniforms in order to confuse soldiers.
National Union MK Uri Arieli condemned the idea.
