by Cash Crop

The unexpected closure and departure of the ever popular and sucessful Berkeley Indoor Gardens at 844 University leves many in the lurch and other stores left to pick up the slack. telephone contact revealed nothing as to a clue. In this town of rumor and distortion, how could they split without a trace?

Berkeley is sort of strange. There is the population at large, who may or may not match what the rest of the country expects of them. Then there is the city council, and then there is the police department. These three groups may have entirely different value sets. When the Berkeley antidrug task force raided my roomming house based on false reports from one of the local residents with schizophrenia, they made a comment to the target pothead resident that the (previous) mayor likes them and gives them funding. This was headed by this guy filmed by Jason Meggs here rather disreputably impersonating an 'anarchist' and then stealing a previous indybay photographer's film: http://www.indybay.org/news/2002/05/126202_comment.php?theme=default

Meanwhile, the city's legal code says that marijuana laws are to receive lesser enforcement unless someone is being a problem and gets complaints. And then the population didn't support the medical marijuana expansion bill because I guess it sounded sketchy to them. I guess all these groups can kind of proceed about their business with their contrasting missions.

Is this information true? I haven't seen/heard any other news regarding this, although their web site has been taken down.
Any more info ?

Actually, Berkeley Indoor Garden just changed ownership. They have been open all month and their old phone number still works. The old crew, Cate, Orrin, and Corrie are back. They don't look fully stocked yet but they have a lot of stuff and they are cheaper than everywhere else. Hurray!

Berkeley Indoor Garden is reopened in the same location. The old crew, Cate, Orrin and Corrie are back. And they have the same phone number 549-1234. Hurray the original indoor gardening store is back.

I don't see how BIG is under new ownership seeing as Victor sold all of his inventory and they are open under a different name, Indoor Garden Store of Berkeley, or something. It's true that all the old people are back, great, but they still have the shitty system of not scanning products into the computer so the employees have to look it up in a book or memorize. So when I went there for a quick stop, like usual it took forever. It was great when they were going under as everything was on a super deal which I got, thanks. I've had mixed experiences there, I would go to Enviromental Concepts on 5th st right around the corner, or one of the other 5 that have popped up recently.
