No Toxic Housing on Zeneca Contamination Site!
About 60 people; Doctors, Engineers & Grassroots Organizers blocked the front entrance to the Campus Bay -Zeneca Contamination Site in Richmond on Dec 1st at 6:30am. This was an action against the construction of housing on the contaminated Zeneca site which was once used as a Uranium & Plutonium experiment site in the 1960s. The site includes a marsh, wildlife, industrial buildings, offices and a site of toxic condos in contruction.
For over 100 years, the shoreline of Richmond, California between what is now Marina Bay (the housing development adjacent to the Richmond Marina) and CostCo off Central Avenue, has been heavily polluted. The major part of that land, currently owned by Cherokee Investment Partners and the University of California, was an AstraZeneca chemical facility. This facility produced sulfuric acid, pesticides, and herbicides, and ran tests on uranium. As a result of 100 years of operation, the land underneath the facility has been described as some of the most toxic in California.
