Nov. 30 City Council Will Revisit Parade Ordinance

by Dan Bacher (danielbacher [at] hotmail.com)
The November 30 Sacramento City Council meeting will revisit the infamous "Son of Patriot Act" parade ordinance. It's very important for activists to review the ordinance, as posted on the city's website, and come to the council meeting.
Nov 30 City Council will revisit Parade Ordinance i.e. "Son of Patriot Act"

As described below, the new Parade Ordinance is available on the
Sacramento City Council web site NOW, but instead of next week, the
Council meeting to discuss it will not be until November 30, giving us
plenty of time to study it. MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND PLAN TO BE THERE!
The Supreme Court defends the First Amendment, saying "freedom of
speech" means millionaires can spend as much of their money as they want
on their political campaigns. But last time I looked at the
Constitution, it didn't say only the Veterans of Foreign Wars have a
right to peaceably assemble. Let's give the Council a resounding Civics
lesson on the 30th.

P.S. what do Californians call "civics" anyway -- in Chicago, that was
the class where we read the constitution and learned about separation of
powers. How much simpler education is nowadays, that teachers don't have
to bother making kids learn stuff like the rules for electing a
president.

Hi everyone,
(I apologize if you are receiving this message more than once, but
some of you are on more than one list. Sorry)
The latest version of the parade ordinance (yes they have revised it
yet again) is now on the City of Sacramento's website. Go to
http://www.cityofsacramento.org and then click on "Parade and Park Use
Regulations - updated) then click on the Nov. 30th version. They have
made an exception for people wanting to carry unloaded guns in parades.
Those folks have to have the police inspect their
weapons before the parade. They have also increased the thickness of
cardboard to 1/3 of an inch for signs. I have to read it thoroughly
before I can point out any other changes. Now, more than ever, it is
obvious that they are targeting political speech. I'll send out more
later. I suggest that everyone read it and think about a response. More
later.
