Antinuclear activist died of wounds Sunday after train amputated legs

A 23 year old antinuclear activist who had chained himself to the train tracks to stop the ongoing and dangerous nuclear waste transports ("castors") between Germany and France was killed Sunday, apparently somewhere along the French side of the route. The train amputated both legs, and the activist apparently died of wounds during transit to the hospital. Three other activists left the tracks in time and were apparently wounded.

Large scale decentralized blockade and interference tactics have surprised police along the entire route of the transport, which is usually subject to heavier police presence (tens of thousands), but activists changed tactics this year, and the states didn´t catch on until too late to stop the barricades. All blockade actions are always conducted with warning signals to the train drivers to prevent accidents like that today. Other actions included damaging the rails, lockboxes across and under the rails, and much more. In the wake of this activist´s death, the local emissaries of state power (national guard cops) were pummeled with stones and bottles during their forest patrols, and a tree or two was felled onto their vehicles.

Mourning demonstrations are being called for right now across Europe.

The nuclear industry in Germany is closely tied with military nuclear capability --- in fact, that is the only motivation for many parts of the German nuclear program, and that´s a huge reason why people turn out --- large and determined --- to stop nuclear activities. The main corporation involved in Siemens, maker of everything from cell phones to computers to coffee makers, and thereby delightfully boycottable.
