WHAT I WILL DO IF ELECTED:

If I serve under a Democratic President:

FOREIGN POLICY: Iraq: We must admit we made a mistake by invading Iraq, apologize and ask the help of the U.N. and the rest of the world in cleaning up the mess we created. Israel: Support the Israeli peace movement by reducing aid until the settlements are dismantled and a Palestinian state is established.

PATRIOT ACT: Pelosi voted for this horrendous attack on civil rights. We must repeal it. Patriot Act 2 is even worse. Pelosi leads no fight against it.

ECONOMY: Fund a job program, equivalent to CETA in the 70's. This will reduce unemployment and put money in the hands of the people at the bottom, who will put it back into circulation.

HOUSING: Housing is a right, not a privilege. Maintain and repair all existing public housing. Build more subsidized housing, including co-housing. The homeless epidemic began under Reagan and is reversible. Homelessness is a national, not a local issue. I will work to get all the public housing units in San Francisco repaired and made habitable.

TRANSIT: We need reliable, frequent, and pleasant mass transit. People in cities should be able to live easily without a car. We must have more frequent bus service in San Francisco. You can't expect people to rely on something that is not reliable! A full mass transit system includes a subsidized national railway and taxi vouchers for those unable to use buses or subways.

GAY RIGHTS: I will work to change immigration laws so that partners of gay U.S. citizens can legally live here. This issue is close to my heart. I myself had a relationship end because we couldn't legally live in the same country. I have several lesbian friends involved in bi-national relationships. They struggle endlessly for years with visas and immigration lawyers. I wrote a play on this subject, Two Fools, or Love Conquers All - Not! And I have worked in the past with the Lesbian and Gay Immigration Rights Task ForceThis will alleviate the suffering of bi-national gay couples. . Sixteen countries now allow the immigration of gay partners. Immigration rights proved to be an intermediate step toward full marriage rights for gay people in Holland and Canada.

IF I SERVE UNDER GEORGE BUSH:

We all desperately hope that Bush will not be elected. (He can't be RE-elected, since he wasn't elected the FIRST time.) But if, by some horrible combination of circumstances, he continues in the office of President, my first, second and third priorities will be to…

INITIATE THE IMPEACHMENT OF THE PRESIDENT. If Bush is President, that will be the most important responsibility of any member of the House of Representatives, where the process of impeachment must start. This administration has blatantly lied to the people and the Congress, in order to build a consensus for invading Iraq, a country that was never a threat to us. This is an impeachable offense. It is outrageous that we were dragged through an impeachment only a few years ago over Clinton's sexual relationship with a consenting adult. And yet now an appointed President has misled this country into the swamp of war and occupation, and discussion of impeachment only exists on the fringes of politics! This issue needs to be moved to the center if Bush is elected, and I promise I will do that if I am elected. Nancy Pelosi would never dare to, because she's afraid of appearing “unpatriotic.” But the true patriot has the courage to stand up to her government when it is doing wrong. The most important business of the United States Congress, if Bush is returned to office, is his impeachment .
