Pre-election press conference on Ranked Choice Voting with Supervisor Matt
Gonzalez

When: Monday, November 1, 2004, 11 am
Where: Room 278, City Hall

One day before the November 2, 2004 consolidated election in San Francisco,
Supervisor and Board President Matt Gonzalez is holding a pre-election
press conference on ranked choice voting (RCV). The purpose of this press
conference will be to review for the media and interested members of the
public the following important items:

1. Guidelines for voters. What every San Francisco voter needs to know
when voting on Tuesday, November 2.

2. Release of RCV data on election night and subsequent days. It will be
explained how the RCV data with voters' rankings will be processed
and election results determined. Examples of data files and
tabulation results like the kind that will be released on Election
night and afterward will be on hand.

3. “What will a good ranked choice voting election look like?” What
benchmarks and standards will be used to understand what constitutes
a successful election? A series of benchmarks and standards will be
presented.

4. Transparency and security issues. The Department of Elections will
be releasing the data set with anonymous records of all voters’
rankings, allowing an unprecedented level of transparency and
security.

Supervisor Gonzalez will be assisted in this press conference by the Center
for Voting and Democracy. The Director of Elections John Arntz also has
been invited to attend, and he will do so schedule permitting.
