Death Toll from Israel's Gaza Offensive Rises to 100

by repost
GAZA (Reuters) - Israeli air strikes killed five Palestinians in Gaza Thursday as the Palestinian death toll rose to 100 in a 16-day-old army offensive aimed at crushing militants behind rocket salvoes into Israel.

Five more Palestinians were killed Thursday in Gaza as Israel pushed on with a massive operation in the north of the territory despite criticism by officers that the offensive had become counter-productive.

Three Palestinians, including 70-year-old Ismail Assawalhi were killed in a pre-dawn air raid in the southern Gaza town of Rafah where a column of tanks also destroyed 34 homes in a brief incursion.

Two members of the radical Islamist movement Hamas were also killed in an air strike on the northern Jabaliya refugee camp, which has been the main focus of the army's so-called Operation Days of Penitence since its launch late last month.

A total of 124 Palestinians have now been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the offensive, which is the deadliest carried out by the Israeli military since the start of the intifada more than four years ago.

GAZA CITY - Two Palestinians were killed and another died of his wounds inflicted by Israeli troops in the Gaza Strip early Thursday, a Palestinian security source said.

The two, Ali Shaath, 19, and Ahmad Dahawi, 20, were killed when an Israeli helicopter gunship fired a rocket at Rafah refugee camp in the south of the strip, wounding another three people.

Two of them, a 65-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman, were seriously injured.

Twenty Israeli tanks entered the camp where a bulldozer levelled several houses.

At the same time, another Palestinian, Nidal Massud, an activist of radical Palestinian movement Hamas, died of his wounds inflicted earlier by another rocket fired by a helicopter at Jabaliya refugee camp further north. Another Hamas member died in that attack.

The latest deaths bring to 123 the total number of Palestinians killed in Gaza since the launch of Israel’s Operation Days of Penitence.

They also bring the overall toll since the September 2000 start of the Palestinian uprising to 4,487, including 3,459 Palestinians and 954 Israelis, according to an AFP count.

sraeli air strikes have killed five Palestinian refugees in Gaza as an army offensive that has taken more than a 100 lives continues unabated.

Missiles blew up two Palestinians in the Jabalya refugee camp in north Gaza on Thursday after most of the makeshift city was stormed by more than 200 tanks and troop carriers.

Helicopters backing a separate occupation force that swept into the Rafah refugee camp in Gaza's far south, also fired three missiles, killing a civilian in his 70s and two men, whom soldiers said were armed.

Witnesses said Israeli troops with armoured bulldozers also demolished about 20 houses before withdrawing.

Israeli forces frequently raze Palestinian buildings they say harbour resistance fighters who fire at them during their raids.

Meanwhile, the army's north Gaza incursion, its biggest inside the tiny territory since a Palestinian revolt began in 2000, has killed at least 43 unarmed civilians who were taking no part in the resistance.

The "Palestinians" have constantly been committing terrorist attacks on the Israelis, who have the right to defend themselves. So it is the "Palestinians" the ones to blame for everything that happens.

But if the Israelis did not confiscate Palestinian Land and demolish Palestinian homes, and drop bombs on Palestinian People.....The Palestinians would not have to fight the Israelis for their land and freedom.

It is the Israelis who are confiscating Palestinian land, The Palestinians are not going into Israel Proper and confiscating Israeli land.......

The Palestinians are not the ones who killed 100 people in less then two weeks.......

If the "Palestinians" didin't carry out brutal terrorist attacks on the Israelis, the Israelis wouldn't demolish houses or do anything else against the "Palestinians".

I can't believe people who actually believe that Israel is defending itself against Palestine. Look at Palestine, they are an impoverished nation who has to fight with what they have, and that makes them terrorists? Is it not a terrorist act to kill hundreds, in what could possibly escalate into genocide, as long as you are killing with goverment issued tanks? Israeli's are settling into Palestinian land that does not belong to them, and the Palestinians are retaliating because they are getting land that rightfully belongs to them stolen. I am an American Jew and even I think what Israel is doing is wrong. Zionism is just another word for Nationalism in this situation. Look at the death tolls on each side. If Israel is really defending themselves, they might be overdoing it.

Israel is indeed defending itself against Palestinian terror. Erecting the security barrier that has already reduced terror against Israel proper by a 90% rate, plus the perpetual raids to apprehend wanted terrorists or kill them of they resist, plus clashes with terrorists in which tanks are used are some of the modii operandi Israel uses to defend itself. If you were the Israeli chief of staff, hopefully you would have realized it would be foolish to combat terrorists with inferior or matching weapons to those used by Palestinian terrorists under every circumstance.

It's not the kinds of weaponry used by Palestinians that makes most of them terrorists, but rather the fact they perpetually resort to unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence against Israelis and their property with the intention of intimidating or coercing Israeli society and the Israeli government, often for ideological and political purposes.

As long as assassinations and other killings are for preemptive purposes, it doesn't matter if hundreds or even thousands or being killed by Israeli forces.

Most of the land in Judea-Samaria doesn't actually belong to the Palestinians either. Prior to the 1948 war of independence, resident "Palestinians" owned only 3.3% of the land throughout all of Palestine, while Jews owned 8.6%. The vast majority of the land wasn't privately owned but state land that passed over to the British Mandate rule from the possession of the Ottoman empire; then Judea-Samaria was illegally occupied by Jordan until 1967. That's one of the reasons this territory is designated "disputed" by pro-Israel types.

"Retaliation" for real and imagined wrongs committed against Palestinians is but one cluster of reasons for Palestinian pursuit of terror. The Islamist terror organizations are motivated by a much deeper and overriding ideology which entails assaulting Israelis for merely living in Israel proper and the disputed territories. They consider every Jewish residential area within Israel proper a "settlement". I saw a clip from Hizballah TV where the exact same label was attached to Nahariya in northern Israel.

Death tolls don't tell only a small part of the story. An analysis of the death circumstances of victims from both sides of the divide is much more revealing. You would find that the vast majority of Israelis were non-combatants intentionally targeted for murder whereas the overwhelming majority of Palestinian casualties were mostly combatants along with collateral damage fatalities.

It should read:
