BERKELEY – At a press conference organized today by the Middle East Children’s Alliance, Palestinian-Israeli surgeon Dr. Matani Hasan described the difficulties of providing medical services where otherwise denied. As a family doctor practicing at an outpatient clinic for Israeli Health Services, and as an active member of Physicians for Human Rights/Israel, he described his frustration in trying to cope with the deteriorating health care situation for Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.
Dr. Matani Hasan described the numerous roadblocks and security checkpoints setup within the Occupied Territories, not just the massive wall now under construction. These have become physical barriers that people in need of any medial attention, beyond what basic services may be available in their own village or town, simply cannot cross much of the time.
Middle East Children’s Alliance Political Education Coordinator Uda Walker, having recently returned from the Occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, described in great detail the recent Israeli invasion into northern Gaza, the largest Israeli military incursion in four years.
The death toll of the invasion into Jabaliya Refugee Camp of 113,000 residents in the Northern Gaza Strip continues to rise as 2,000 troops and hundreds of tanks continue their two-week old operation in this densely populated area. At least 118 Palestinians have been killed so far, 25 of who were children under the age of 17. This morning, a 9-year-old Palestinian schoolgirl who was shot in the stomach by Israeli army gunfire while sitting at her desk in a UN-run school died. Additionally, the Israeli army said today it had suspended a officer under investigation for shooting repeatedly at close range into the body of a 13-year-old Palestinian schoolgirl who had already been gunned down on her way to class in southern Gaza last week.
Israeli forces attacked the Jabaliya Refugee Camp and other towns in the Northern Gaza Strip with air and ground strikes on September 30 and on October 1. A total closure of the camp is now being enforced, cutting electricity and water supplies. For a week now, residents have been without access to food supplies and hospitals are without medical and blood supplies. The Israeli military has been denying emergency medical crews access to besieged areas and in several cases targeting medical teams and ambulances. Yesterday, the Union of Health Work Committees in Gaza City reported that local area hospitals and clinics are full and are unable to adequately attend to the injured and dying due to the siege and closure.
“Israel is using American made military equipment including, F-16s, Apache helicopters and Caterpillar D-9 bulldozers against the refugee population, almost half of who are children” said Walker.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to insist that the operation, codenamed “Operation Days of Penitence,” is both justified and necessary to stop the firing of small, handmade rockets from northern Gaza into southern Israel.
In response to the question of what he believes Americans need to understand about this situation, Dr. Matani said, “The problem is the unlimited [US] support for Israel, even though it continues to occupy territories, continues to destroy houses, continues to humiliate the Palestinian people, and continues to use the American weapons to kill Palestinian civilians. What is needed for Americans to know about this conflict is that there is an occupying force, and an occupied people … I’ve not saying people should not support Israel to build the health systems, universities and services for all people, but not to kill the Palestinians.”

I was wondering how Jeff came to be covering something for Indymedia that was not listed on the site in advance (well, I don't see it in the calendar). His organization, Not in Our Name, is initiating a demonstration at 5pm on 11/3, and that demonstration is endorsed by the Middle East Children's Alliance.
Not everyone knows from Jeff's posts that he is not just an indymedia reporter- he is also with Not in Our Name and is a long time (how long?) RCP "supporter" (member).

The best content on this site often comes from people not officially members of the collective. There is no membership for being a reporter. That's part of the point of Indymedia and what makes it different from other news sources. A collective may be needed to make sure the site stays running, but open source publishing allows a diversity of views and coverage that extends way beyond what one activist group could do on its own. Most activists are going to mainly cover the movements that they are personally involved with, but with a site that allows different groups to post and feel a sense of ownership in the sites content, it hardly matters. If someone reading the site feels that certain local events are not being covered, they can post to the site and start covering the events themselves. If Indymedia ever became a closed group of reporters where posts by members was given more weight than posts by other activists in the community, it would lose much of its power.
I usually don't respond to these kinds of posts, but here I go...
I covered the Middle East Children's Alliance press conference after receiving their press release via email. I assume that I am on their list based on my previously published work.
Like most regular IMC contributors, I have another job. I work for the national office of the Not in Our Name project based in New York City. However, I work out of, and volunteer for, our Bay Area office here in Oakland. The majority of my IMC posts are actually done on behalf of Not in Our Name -- over 60 of my IMC links from the last two years are archived at the Not in Our Name Bay Area website at http://bayarea.notinourname.net -- this is not exactly a secret. Folks can also "Google" me for much more "dirt".
The above posting was not done on behalf of Not in Our Name. Regardless of MECA's endorsement of the Not in Our Name's upcoming November 3 anti-war march and rally (5pm Powell and Market, march to 24th and Mission), I felt that the message of their press conference should be covered, and I did so. That is basically how the IMC works.
The RCP thing seems to be a political fishing expedition, along the lines of "Are you now, or have you ever been, a member of the Communist Party?"
Not in Our Name is, from time to time, derided as a "RCP-front group" in some circles. Like most red-baiting, this is usually done with statements such as "everybody knows". The actual basis for this red-baiting is that a few RCP activists have played an important role in building Not in Our Name since it’s beginning in 2002.
However, anyone who believes that the RCP "controls" Not in Our Name simply has not been a part of our efforts, or paying much attention. Our organizing meetings (every Wednesday night) are open to all who want to take on the "war on the world", "police state restrictions", and "detentions and roundups". Our goals and outlook are clearly posted on our website (http://www.notinourname.net). And our activities in support of these goals are a matter of public record (including on indybay.org).
Finally, I am not a member of the RCP, nor would I refer to myself as a supporter, but I do appreciate some of their efforts. I could say the same thing for a few other lefty groups as well.
Hope that is helpful.

You, of course, can be sure that many people of conscience, of all ethnicities, in the Bay Area appreciate all your work in support of social and global justice, and especially against war and letting disproportionately poor, working-class, and even working-middle-class small-town teenagers & twenty-somethings (mostly anyone without a ready 4-year university alternative) be used as cannon fodder for the elite and their international and military-industrial contract corporations.
It's probably just one of the 'neighborhood' Zionoids that was trying to McCarthy-like red-bait or besmirch you above. Not that there's anything wrong in being a good, conscious, intelligent lefty. And I guess they were trying insinuate that you are an "Arab-lover" too! I've got a sticker, for demos, that says I'm one!
I'm pleased that you provided the very interesting post about your journalistic and political activities and background, along with the relevant links. We all know that the Zionists and Arab-haters wouldn't try to attack/smear you, with their special attention, if you weren't being so effective. It's actually 'a mark of honor & distinction' from them. [I myself usually just didactically make fun of them.] Otherwise, pay them no mind.

This kind of lets you down, doesn't it?
If that officer is court marshalled and sent to do prison time, you'll probably holler, "why wasn't he sentenced to life and hard labor?!", won't you?

These are some of the reasons why we need that Palestinian State in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza......
So that the Israeli Military can stay inside its own borders of Israel Proper.....and this Struggle for Palestinian Freedom can be achieved and the conflict can end.
Tit for Tat is getting us nowhere, as proof you can see there is still conflict after thirty six years. So you have to look at the problem as it stands today, and do the right thing so both people can live in peace and with freedom.
If only one side has freedom, the other side will always be seeking it, in anyway they can. That is why there have been wars as far back as we can remember.
Thirty six years of war should be enough for such a small number of people, when you consider the World Population.
You can end this never ending conflict by allowing the Palestinian People to have their small state in the Whole of the West Bank and Gaza.
There are 1,200,000 or so Arabs living inside Israel Proper.
There are 400,000 or so Jews living inside the West Bank and Gaza.
Trying to remove all the settlement can be an almost undoable task.
So Set the Borders for Israel to it Pre 1967 Border (Green Line) and have the State of Palestine inside the West Bank and Gaza.
If the U.N. can decide the Borders of Israel in 1948.
The U.N. can decide the Borders of Palestine in 2004.
You would end up with Israel with a majority Jewish Population and Palestine with a majority Muslim Population.
This would allow for the Israeli Military to Guard and Control the Israeli pre 1967 borders instead of confiscating Palestinian Land and Demolishing Palestinian Homes in the West Bank and Gaza that only goes to fuel the need for the Palestinian People to fight for their Freedom.
The Jews who do not like living in the new Palestinian State can feel free to move to Israel if they so choose.
The Arabs living inside Israel can feel free to move to the new Palestinian State if they so choose.
Almost every nation on earth has more then one ethnic group or religious group. So why not Israel and Palestine?
It would sure be better then the never ending conflict we have right now.

A preliminary report presented to Israel’s army chief today said it could not be proven that a platoon commander repeatedly shot an injured 13-year-old Palestinian girl.
A separate military police investigation into the incident is continuing.

Tit for Tat is getting us nowhere, as proof you can see there is still conflict after thirty seven years. So you have to look at the problem as it stands today, and do the right thing so both Peoples can live in Peace and with Freedom.
If only one side acts with Reason, the other side will always be seeking to avoid compromises based on Reason, anyway they can. That is why there have been wars as far back as we can remember.
Thirty seven years of war should be enough for such a small number of people, when you consider the World Population.
You can end this never ending Conflict by allowing the Palestinian People to have their small state in a Small Part of the West Bank and Gaza.
There are 1,200,000 or so Arabs living inside Israel Proper.
There are 400,000 or so Jews living inside the West Bank and Gaza.
Trying to remove all the Settlements can be an almost undoable task.
So Set the Borders for Israel somewhat beyond its Pre 1967 Border (Green Line) and have the State of Palestine inside Part of the West Bank and Gaza.
If the U.N. could decide the Borders of Israel in 1947and fail to protect the Jews from the Arab Attack that ensued...
The U.N. can not decide the Borders of Palestine in 2004.
You would end up with Israel with a majority Jewish Population and Palestine with a majority Muslim Population.
This would allow for the Israeli Military to Guard and Control the new Israeli Borders instead of confiscating Palestinian Land and Demolishing Palestinian Homes in the West Bank and Gaza, provided the Palesinian Terrorists stop trying to rob Israelis of their Freedom by initiating attacks on Israeli citizens that only go to fuel the Israeli reprisals.
The Jews who do not like living in the new Palestinian State can feel free to move to Israel if they so choose.
The Arabs living inside Israel should feel free to move to the new Palestinian State if they so choose.
Almost every nation on earth has more then one ethnic group or religious group. So why not Israel and Palestine?
It would sure be better then the never ending Tit for Tat Conflict we have right now.

'CT' a.k.a. CHICKENSHIT TENDERS!: "This kind of lets you down, doesn't it? If that officer is court marshalled and sent to do prison time, you'll probably holler, "why wasn't he sentenced to life and hard labor?!", won't you?"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ooooo!: "*suspended*!!!
WHY ISN'T HE ALREADY IN *JAIL*!!!??? -- PENDING A HEARING AND A TRIAL!!!??? -- AS HE WOULD BE IN ANY OTHER SO-CALLED "DEMOCRACY"!! -- AS OPPOSED TO A JEWISH-SUPREMACIST APARTHEID STATE.
*YOU* WALK OVER -- AT LEAST IN AMERICA! -- AND SHOOT SOME LITTLE GIRL *20* TIMES AND SEE IF ALL *YOU* GET IS "SUSPENDED" FROM *YOUR* JOB!!
An Israeli *JEWISH* peace activist said that these kinds of child killings by Israeli soldiers occur ALL THE TIME -- and **NOTHING** ever happens to the Israeli soldiers! She, then, was not sure how/why *that* child murder was getting so much attention. I don't yet know: maybe this time it was JUST TOO *TOO* **TOO** DAMN BLATANT!
I suggest that it was like the U.S. soldiers My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War, where scores of innocent villager were wantonly and savagely killed by American soldiers. It almost went *unreported* in the American newspapers, because human rights workers said that sort of thing went on all the time -- and *everybody* knew it!
'CT' a.k.a. CHICKENSHIT TENDERS!: "If that officer is court marshalled and sent to do prison time, you'll probably holler, "why wasn't he sentenced to life and hard labor?!", won't you?"
THIS SHOWS YOU FOR THE *CHICKENSHIT* THAT YOU ARE:
I GUESS THAT YOU *DON'T* THINK THAT A GUY WHO SINGLES OUT A LITTLE GIRL, GOES OVER, STANDS OVER HER HEAD, AND PUMPS *20* BULLETS INTO THE DEFENSELESS LITTLE GIRL -- *FIVE* IN HER HEAD!! -- SHOULD ***NOT*** GET LIFE WITH HARD LABOR!!??
I THINK THAT YOU ARE ***WORSE*** THAN THE NAZIS THAT YOU ZIONISTS ALL BUT COMPLETELY IMITATE!

BUT, I SAVED THE 'BEST' (so to speak) FOR LAST:
FROM JEFFREY BLANKFORT:
From: "Jeffrey Blankfort"

Subject: Israel Killer Captain Exonerated by Israeli Chief of Staff
"Chief of Staff Moshe Yaalon adopted the interpretation given by the chief of the group suspected to have killed a 13 year old Palestinian girl who had approached a military post near Rafah two weeks ago. According to him, the soldier shot towards the *ground*. The person concerned was still suspended for his infringements in command and bad relationships with his subordinates. (Guysen.Israël.News, 10.16.04).
"Thus, the killer, who was said by his own men to have emptied his gun into the body of this young girl, gets hardly a slap on the wrist."

YOU ZIONAZIS WOULD MAKE THE *ORIGINAL* ONES BLUSH!!
C.T.'s REFERENCE: "The 13-year-old Palestinian girl, Imam al-Hamas, killed last week near an IDF outpost on the Philadelphi route near Rafah, was most likely a lure to get IDF soldiers out of the outpost and into the range of Palestinian sniper fire, Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Moshe Ya’alon told the cabinet Sunday. ...Ya’alon said that the investigation showed that the soldiers fired into the air, but when the girl kept walking [I'D BET THAT SHE WAS *RUNNING*!] and then tossed her backpack, which turned out to be full of books"
AND I GUESS THAT'S WHY THE ISRAELI SOLDIER WENT OVER AND SHOT HER *20* TIMES -- *5* IN THE HEAD ( I GUESS *THAT* SHOWED 'ISRAELI RESTRAINT')!!
LET ME REPEAT: "An Israeli *JEWISH* peace activist [ON THE BBC NEWS] said that these kinds of child killings by Israeli soldiers occur ALL THE TIME -- and **NOTHING** ever happens to the Israeli soldiers!"
ANYWAY, THERE MUST BE A *LOT* OF PALESTINIAN CHILDREN CARRYING BOMBS TO SCHOOL!:
