Former Councilmember Wilson Riles Jr., Debates Police Chief Richard Word on Measure Y, November ballot Initiative that puts funding police ahead of funding program for town hall meeting of Voter Education and Solidarity.

Oakland, CA – Wilson Riles Jr, a former Councilmember who has been prominent in the “No on Measure Y” Campaign will be debating Police Chief Richard Word on Measure Y, the November ballot initiative in Oakland that puts funding police ahead of funding programs, at Sweet Jimies Entertainment Center this Tuesday, October 12th at 6 PM.
The “NO on Measure Y” campaign, headed by the Education Not Incarceration (ENI) Coalition, along with Oakland local groups and concerned community members, such as Councilwoman Desley Brooks, the Oakland Education Association, ILWU 10 and SEIU 616, is currently mobilizing to defeat Measure Y, a November ballot initiative that will direct 60% of newly raised taxes to hire more police officers in Oakland.
“Increasing police presence within our city will not curb violence nor make anyone safer,” said Aaron Shurman, local Oakland Organizer and a member of the Education Not Incarceration.
“True violence prevention begins by investing in the people of our communities,” said Wilson Riles Jr. “We know that what builds strong, safe communities are the investments we make in education and other basic social services,” he added.
No on Measure Y Campaign outreach is held Saturdays meeting at ACORN's (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) office at 3166 Fruitvale Avenue for community outreach beginning at 10AM.
