Falluja raid 'hits wedding party'

by BBC
At least 12 people have been killed and 17 others wounded in a US air strike on the rebel-held city of Falluja in Iraq.
Friday morning's raid on the house in north-west Falluja happened shortly after 0100 local time (2200 GMT).

Reuters news agency reported rescuers clawing through the rubble with their bare hands, chanting "There is no God but God" as the body of a man was pulled out.

Doctors at the main city hospital said a father and his seven sons, as well as other wedding guests, were among the dead.

Thursday is traditionally the day for holding weddings in Iraq, says the BBC's Karen Allen in Baghdad.

The BBC's Jennifer Glasse, with US marines outside Falluja, says Iraqi special forces are being trained to accompany the US in an anticipated ground offensive into the city.

FALLUJAH: Twelve people were killed and the bride injured at a wedding party was among the wounded when US warplanes bombed Fallujah early yesterday.

The US military said it was a "precision strike" targeting leaders of Iraq's most wanted man, the Al Qaeda-linked militant Abu Mussab Al Zarqawi.

"We have received 10 dead and 16 wounded," said a doctor at the Fallujah hospital, noting that the bride was among nine injured females.

Two more bodies were pulled from the rubble of a house where the wedding party had taken place, which was destroyed in the attack.

BAGHDAD, October 09 (Online): Thirteen people, including a groom on his wedding night, were killed and 17 others wounded when American warplanes struck a building in Fallujah, where the US command said leaders of al-Zarqawi’s network were meeting.

A doctor said his hospital received 13 dead, including the groom, and 17 wounded, including the bride. He said most of the injured were female relatives of the groom, who were staying at the house after the wedding.

Muhammad Jawad, who lives next door, said he had just moved into the central neighbourhood to escape repeated shelling on Fallujah’s outskirts. His brother and six nephews were killed in the strike, which damaged their house. "This attack shows that there is no safe place in Fallujah, and the Americans are not differentiating between civilians and armed men," Jawad said in tears, as he was treated for shrapnel wounds to his face and hand.

The US command said "credible intelligence sources" reported terrorist leaders were meeting at the targeted house. Elsewhere, a US soldier was killed and another wounded in an attack in Tuz, the military said. The latest death brings to 1,062 the number of US troops killed in Iraq since last year’s invasion.

A US air raid, aimed at foreign fighters led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, killed 11 people and wounded 17 after a wedding party in the rebel-held Iraqi city of Falluja yesterday, residents and doctors said.

The US military said a "precision strike" hit a safe-house used by associates of the Jordanian Islamist militant in northwest Falluja at 1.15am (11.15am NZT yesterday).

Rescuers dug bodies from rubble with their hands after the raid on the house where residents said a wedding party had just taken place. They said the groom died and the bride was wounded.
