PAPER BULLETS: A WAR OF WORDS
Please join us for a reception celebrating the opening of this ambitious new project on Wednesday, October 6 from 6 to 9pm...
Paper Bullets: A War of Words combines new work by Sandow Birk, Amanda Eicher, René Garcia, Mondo Jud Hart, Packard Jennings, Kara Maria, Patrick Piazza, Winston Smith & Christine Wong with material from a 50-year survey of psychological warfare & military propaganda (specifically leaflets dropped from the sky to weaken, scare, and divide military and civilian populations in times of war) from the collection of Stephen J. Hasegawa. By examining how graphics and language are used in this specific type of propaganda, the nine artists engage with this complex history by creating new work that responds to and re-contextualizes psychological warfare. Intersection’s Gallery will be transformed into a dynamic space consisting of historical aerial propaganda leaflets created by the United States, Nazi Germany, Japan, Vietnam, and Iraq and new works in sculpture, installation, painting, collage, and illustration. Viewers will be consistently challenged to determine not only the message being conveyed, but also who the creator of the message is and the intended audience for the message.
***A number of projects are currently under way that will bring both materials and ideas from the exhibition out into the streets and skies of San Francisco.
Exhibition Dates: October 6 - November 20, 2004
Opening Reception: Wednesday, October 6, 6 - 9pm
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 12 – 5 PM, FREE
