Insightful Chron Reader's Letter - 'Shouts of Delight'
I read this letter today and it stuck in my head because of this one statement (following) that is so candid. I was sort of amazed that the Chron printed it, but then, their goal seems to be to polarize the readership, so this would be good for that. The only sad part is that neither this writer, much of the world, nor the US Kerry voters seem to grasp that 'stopping' Bush - in whatever way - will not stop the machine that is now started and moving full steam ahead. We've already sold out on almost everything as a country and anyone who gets installed in that position will work to destroy the world for the benefit of the rich and corporate elite. Taking the lesser evil only keeps us with evil. Does it have to get worse to get better? Wake up, it's getting worse to go nowhere and there's nothing we can do to stop it, so getting worse to get better is a step in the right direction. Here's the part I appreciated ----
"After he [Kennedy] was assassinated, we were met on the streets by hugs and tears because our president was such a well loved leader. Today, I'm afraid we would be met with shouts of delight."

U.S. less safe
Editor -- I have visited or lived in more than 40 countries and in the last three years have become extremely discouraged about how the world sees the United States and our policies. In 1963-1964, while traveling around the world for the first time, I was welcomed as a citizen of the most respected country on Earth. This was during the time of the beginning of the Peace Corps, and sadly, the year of John F. Kennedy's death. After he was assassinated, we were met on the streets by hugs and tears because our president was such a well loved leader. Today, I'm afraid we would be met with shouts of delight.
Two years ago, studying in India with people from such varied places as Australia, Switzerland and Israel, it was very different. Our president was being compared with Adolph Hitler in local publications, and our country seen as a country of selfish bullies, who were using up the world's resources and who cared only for material wealth.
Bush has made our nation and the world a much less safe place.
