Despite pushing for bans against so-called assault weapons, Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry now admits he owns a "Communist Chinese assault rifle.''

''My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam,'' Kerry told Outdoor Life magazine for its October issue. ''I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle.''

When asked by the New York Times for more information about the weapon, Kerry spokesman Michael Meehan said Kerry was a registered gun owner in Massachusetts.

Meehan said Thursday he was unable to ask the senator about the rifle because of Kerry's hoarse voice, and the Times reports he did not respond to further inquiries.

Kerry is a hunter who voiced support for the recently expired assault-weapons ban, and often tells citizens he's never met anyone who wanted to use an AK-47 to shoot a deer.

Andrew Arulanandam, a spokesman for the National Rifle Association, told the Times the comment in Outdoor Life made Kerry's support of the ban disingenuous.

''It's OK for John Kerry to own these kinds of firearms, but it's not OK for John Q. Public?'' Arulanandam said, adding Kerry could be subject to court-martial if the gun were brought home from the war as a souvenir. ''He certainly owes people an explanation as to why there's a double standard.''

Contrary to how people USUALLY consider laws.

OK, there ARE people who only want society to declare things illegal if THEY don't wnat to do those things and have legal the things that they want to do. They want OTHER people to be restricted by laws, not themselves.

"I don't want to marry somebody of the same sex as myself --- it should be illegal for homosexuals to marry"

I don't want and wouldn't get an abortion --- abortions should be illegal"

I don't wnat to smkoe marijuanna, I prefer booze, marijuanna should be illegal but not alchohol"

There is NOTHING inconsistent with Kerry taking the position that we should have a law banning possession of assault rifles while at the same time, while it is NOT illegal, possessing one. There is no reason for us to impose upon ourselves things which we might want universally imposed but that is not yet the case. You don't understand? OK, let's try some examples.

"I believe that the rich should pay a higher rate of income taxes and estate taxes -- therefore, I (assuming I were rich) will voluntarily contribute this larger amount to the government"

"I believe we should have a lower speed limit to save on fuel and to reduce deaths in accident. Meanwhile I will drive 10-15 mph slower than the established speed limitsw which I feel are too high"/

"I believe we should not have 'right turn on red' --- therefore I will block the turn lane until the light changes"

And BTW, you do NOT have a quote from Kerry denying the desire to own an assault rifle. He just said that he didn't know anybody who wanted to use one for hunting deer. BTW, in Massachusetts you can't used ANY rifle to hunt deer (it's a "shotgun state"). Well that's not quite accurate since you can during the "primative arms" season <you could use a flintlock rifle as well as a smoothbore musket and some of the "black power" folks use percusion cap rifles -- the rule is "muzzle loaders" only>
