Health Care Not Warfare Organizing Meeting

Date:
Thursday, September 30, 2004
Time:
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Event Type:
Meeting
Organizer/Author:
Code Blue
Location Details:
133 Golden Gate Ave.

We are a new affinity group called Code Blue, formed by members of the Bay Area Radical Health Collective. Whether Bush or Kerry becomes the next president, we will send a loud and clear message that the time has come to spend scarce public resources on the services and institutions that actually benefit people, and to immediately reverse policies of excessive military spending and corporate greed.

We are part of a growing nation-wide movement, sponsored by a broad coalition of anti-war/anti-empire/global justice activist organizations (http://www.beyondvoting.org), planning for radical street demonstrations on November 3rd, the day after the election. No matter who wins, the world needs to hear that the people of the U.S. demand fundamental social, economic, and political change.

A CALL TO ACTION
Health Care Not Warfare!

Right now, over 45 million Americans lack health insurance!

The last four years of the Bush administration have been characterized by a "war on terrorism" involving rampant militarism abroad and a police state at home. While tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed or seriously wounded, hundreds of thousands more have been deprived of health care as a consequence of the U.S.-led destruction of Iraqi social and welfare institutions.

Meanwhile, millions of people around the world -- including U.S. citizens -- have been deprived of health care as a consequence of the billions of taxpayer dollars allocated to fund the war on terrorism. Over 45 million Americans lack health insurance, and many are just one health crisis away from poverty or homelessness. The Bush administration has fostered unfettered corporate greed in the health care industry, allowing pharmaceutical and insurance companies to reap enormous profits at the expense of affordable and accessible public health care.

Unfortunately, John Kerry has also promoted his presidential campaign on a war platform-emphasizing the importance of military muscle over compassion. Both candidates have fostered the notion that the security of the U.S. depends upon the strength of its military and police, when true security can only come from a sincere commitment to freedom, equality, and social justice.

We must participate in voting every day of the year with our feet, our hands, our hearts, and our imaginations! We must protest the enormous human costs of having a war president in the white house-be he Republican or Democrat.

JOIN US IN THE STREETS ON NOVEMBER 3RD. WE NEED TO TAKE DIRECT ACTION BEYOND VOTING, NO MATTER WHO WINS!
