Bay Area Group Urges Voters to “Take Back the Vote”
Women’s group sponsors free screenings of film Fahrenheit 9/11 to help educate voters.
September 1, 2004 – (Oakland, CA) – Walking Our Talk, an ad hoc group of Bay Area women, is sponsoring free screenings of the documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11. With an available coupon, members of the public can attend any weekend matinee in September at Oakland’s Grand Lake Theater, courtesy of Walking Our Talk.
“In Fahrenheit 9/11, we glimpsed inside our current President’s inner circle and saw the people and forces behind his administration and decisions. I was painfully reminded that so many of us have been deliberately left out of the discussion,” said Rudell O’Neal, a computer industry manager and co-founder of Walking Our Talk.
“We came together to make sure that all our voices are heard, because this election’s about our future and our children’s future. Even though the last election was decided with only 537 votes, many people feel their vote won’t count. So, this time, more than ever, we want to make sure people are informed and that they vote.”
At the screenings, Walking Our Talk will have volunteers to register voters. The group has also produced a voter’s guide that outlines the major election issues, some of which are raised in the movie. Additional information is available on their website http://www.smartsisters.com.
Describing themselves as a “group of friends who came together for a common cause,” Walking Our Talk is composed of 12 women of color, from a variety of professions, backgrounds and faiths. Using their collective talents, Walking Our Talk was formed with three objectives in mind: ensure we have a better informed electorate, register as many as we can to vote, and encourage people to talk to friends and family about voting and using absentee ballots.
“After people have seen the film, we're going to trust that they are thinking human beings and leave the rest to God,” said O’Neal, “Though no one in our group is voting for President Bush.”
Walking Our Talk has received support and assistance from the California Democratic Party, East Bay Voter Registration Coalition, African Americans for Kerry, the San Francisco Democratic Women's Forum, and the California Conference Commission on Social Action - African Methodist Episcopal Church, 5th Episcopal District.
